SPI Black Epoxy Sheen

I shot two coats of SPI black epoxy on some suspension components last night. Also shot the rear end housing. I was wanting a satin look but got a gloss. Was hoping it might dull a little but it appeared the same this evening when I got home from work. Seems I saw a formula or such for altering the sheen of this product but of course I can't find it now. I need to figure this out, as I intend to paint my engine bay with SPI Black epoxy and it cannot be glossy.

Thanks,

John

Try reducing your last coat 20-25% after letting the initial 1:1 coats to dry at least a few hours. You could try it now on the parts you have already sprayed.

Thanks Matt. I know I saw something on this forum in regards to acquiring the sheen using reducer. I never was worth a crap with the search engine.

To dull use fast reducer and one med coat if you do two you will override the reducer.
This is always done after first coats set overnight or it will not dull.
also this above is what most restro shops leave it in, some gloss will go as it cures over the next 90 days.

I noticed over time the gloss was reduced quite a bit. Which I am fine with.

Obviously the 1st pic is right after being painted. In the 2nd pic the water pump and timing cover and frame are epoxy, the engine block I was not able to paint as everything was already assembled. But you can get an idea of how the gloss went away.

Exactly, remember spi epoxy full cure is about 90 days as solvents come out in order like they should.
Solvents must be out before true gloss is shown

Thanks fellas! I think I'll leave it as is. The suspension components are not as important to me as the engine bay will be and this will be a good test. I'm now at a couple days out from shooting it and I think it may be dulling a little.

Raymond, sweet looking motor. Whatcha got going there?

Thanks! 427 Windsor in a 1995 Lightning, no distributor 8x IGN1A coils, Megasquirt MS3/3X, ID1700's etc etc. Just started it this weekend, as soon as I get the kinks worked out it's going on E85 and a Novi 2000 will be added :)
