SPI Black Epoxy for FLAT BLACK application - Use 30% Fast Reducer

I'm new here... been painting four years now.. started with guitars , now on to motorcycles.. i've been looking for a flat black.... and was on this forum and read about SPI Black Epoxy... I bought it with the FAST reducer a must... went without a hitch... epoxy went on like butter... then 10 hours flash and another coat of Epoxy with 30% Fast reducer... Went Flat as heck... loved it... i'll post some pics next week...:)

Working on a all over 94 mazda pick up and am using the black epoxy.... I understand that a 30% reduction is the standard
reduction amount. Do you reduce the combined 1-1 amount ?.

I also would like some input on " induction " as I am not clear on that. Am I to mix 1-1 and let sit in a sealed container ?.

Is it ok to add reducer to the mix and let stand ?

I have read different opinions and would like your thoughts on this.

Thanks,
Mike

There is no standard reduction for the epoxy it is all based on user preference. If you had mixed say 10 ounces ( 5 black, 5 act. ) then you would add 3 ounces for the 30%.... Induction is mixing the epoxy and letting it sit before using which does not need to be in a sealed container..... anywhere from an hour, to overnight, or even a few days if it isn't that warm out. Typically you would add the reducer to the epoxy after the reduction but I have definately done it both ways. Hope this helps!

hey crashka... ya i just did my chopper over the weekend.. looks incredible.. i'll post some pics this week... mix like instructions 1:1 let induction time about 20 to 30 min.. mixing during induction.. at least i did.. shoot with plenty of air and not too heavy... dry overnite or about 8 hours.. then next day same mixing adding fast reducer... about 30 to 40%... turn down volume a little.l. same air... shoot and wala.. smooth beautiful ... semi flat black... i like the satin look..went really well and really smooth when finished .. i even did a gloss black design to go with the flat.. way nice.. good luck..

Jeff, just remember you're not going to have good scratch resistance until the epoxy reaches full cure so be careful with it for awhile.

epoxy

hi bob.. ok, how long to cure..i've already installed back on my bike.. would hate to scratch it up.... thanks jeff

I also would like to know how long is full cure on the black?

I did the first coat 1-1 w 30% reduction with a 40 minute induction time......sweet.

I had problems shooting the roof at the rear....not really a problem just an error on my part....after I did ithe roof while standing in the bed i did the cab back panel and got some overspray on the rear edge of the roof when i did.....I am going to do the second coat tonight.....gonna try a different approach to prevent that from happening again. Not sure what or how... 1st coat covered ok...youu can still see halos from the spots where featheredged...a good second coat should cover . is it advisable/ok to put more than 2 coats on if you have to ? Will there a mil thickness issue?

No , not a problem doing more coats, remember good air pressure less volume... just wet in nicely...make sure its dry.. at least an hour or more is good... should look great ... good luck....i'm sure there are others on this forum with a lot of experience with this product.. my experience with this black spi epoxy is nothing less than great... stuff looks awesome... one forum person advised me of curing time... scratches can happen until cured...

This is just my opinion: Cure rates will vary depending on temperature and application and you will see the durability and scratch resistance improve daily for a few weeks, I wouldn't consider it completely cured until a month passes but I think the same of all paint products.

thanks bob.. i thought that would be the answer i would get back...
