SPI bicycle frame

Hi Everyone. Been here a while, learn a ton from this site. I manufacture bicycle frames and I paint them with SPI products! I also own a school that teaches the art of bicycle framebuilding and this is something a student completed recently. The lugs (fittings that join the tubes) completely hand carved.

Painted 98% with SPI products from primer to color to clear!

I'm thinking, A+, am I right?

Hey, those "L"s are Louisiana!

Yeah, got an A+. All my students do well but some just show a natural talent for it. Don't forget about the paint, you know how many sins we can hide with a good paint job:rolleyes: Its my job to make them all look pro.

Student is from Lafayette and chose Mardi-Gras as a theme on this frame. Painted in the purple, gold and green colors of Mardigras!

Did the student fab the lugs from rough stock, or were they commercially made and he did the art work? either way, very nice :)

These were made from 4130 cro-moly tubing rough stock. The student came up with the art-work. I just helped him implement it. Although not really all that common in our world, customizing a stock lug or although rare, making them completely from scratch is something we do with bicycle frame joints. These started as machined sleeves of aircraft cro-mo. The designs were hand cut using a jewelers saw, Joints mitered, then joined together using bronze fillet welding, finished and then finally fabricated into a bicycle frame using silver brazing.

It's a ton of work but the results are pretty cool when done right. It's kind of a dying craft. Hard to charge enough for it to make it viable. Nobody ever said half of what we do as crafts people make any sense at all.:p

I know we talk a lot but it is just neat to see the work, had no idea you were a teacher.

Nice work.
