Son's firsts

The car is 99% finished. We still have to label the dash switches and place decals on the exterior. I'd love to have a big SPI logo for the hood! We aligned the car last night and are headed to the chassis dyno this thursday. I'll post more pics later.

Looking really nice. Looks like you 2 had fun putting it together.

That project has come a long way! Nice! I've worked on a few of those, I found it amazing how long they used singlestage, bet that red roof didn't have clear on it when you prepped it unless it was repainted.

Bob, it had been repainted so it was cleared. I took some pictures outside but my camera doesn't do it justice. The car looks alot better and sharper in person. I did enjoy working on the car with him but it wasn't always fun. Sometimes he didn't want to fool with it and, other times, I didn't. The good part is we pulled each other along. Dyno day tomorrow! BTW, look at that hood. It needs a big SPI logo! Thanks for everybody's positive comments, I appreciate it.

On the old SPI website if you clicked on the logo it would give you downloadable logo files that you could print, save, or whatever.

I found a file I saved for the 16" spi logo. I can email it to you if you wish. 4.67 meg file

I had some access problems but Dub got me straight. We went to the engine builder's shop (Mike Rossini) and he worked with us to maximize output. We head to VIR this weekend for a shakedown run. Senile, I'll send you a message to get the file.

This is awesome, well done!

Getting my Dad interested when I was young was like pulling teeth and always ended up in an argument of some sort. I hope when my kids get older, they show the same interest your son has. I would love to take my kids racing on the weekends and turn spanners during the week.

Bob, I'm glad we did it and feel like he learned alot in the process. Ash, I don't want this project to come off as it was all fun and games. We argued over stuff because, at times, he didn't see the big picture. Sometimes I had to remind him I was there to help him and we were working towards the same goal. That being said, it was gratifying for both of us and he is proud of his accomplishment and I'm proud of him for trying. We work pretty well together trackside so I'm looking forward to this weekend eventhough the temps will be in the 30s.

Just wanted to post an update. The white epoxy is in its second full season and has held up really well. My son wipes the car down with lacquer thinner because it makes short work of the marks caused by rubber flying off of nearby cars. There are rock traps at various tracks were lots of rock gets thrown up as a result of cars going off; windshields are routinely broken. The white epoxy still looks good even though it gets pelted lap after lap. We also painted the interior with white epoxy and it isn't wearing where his feet do their magic. I look at alot of cars and most are worn to the bare metal in those areas. My son wipes the black epoxy underneath with WD40 to clean the dirt and it looks as good as the day we painted it. Make no mistake, the racecar has been beatened, banged, slammed, jammed, pushed and pulled. We've had the left front fender off beating it into shape so we could make the next outing. People are always asking me what the hell we painted it with because it is so durable. I point to the SPI banner on the quarter panel. I don't know if that helps Barry's sales but it is better than what I'm seeing on the other cars.

As for my son, he raced a limited schedule the first year but manged a 7th place finish in regional points. He raced the national championships at VIR and cruised in 5th for most of the race. He made it to 4th and then the leader got punted going into the last set of turns on the last lap. The leader came back on track right in front of my son - killed his momentum going into the last turn. He drag raced two other cars to the finish but ended up 6th. Was still a very proud moment for me to see him finish in the top 10 with the best in the country. This year, he's running a full schedule. 4 poles, 3 wins and a bunch of top 5 finishes. He's dominating the points so, knock-on-wood, he should win the regional points championship. We're headed to Watkins Glen for the national championships in September.

Thanks to SPI for such a great product!
