Sherwin Williams SS

First try at painting. Came out pretty good I think. Used SPI epoxy only. The paint is a single stage Sherwin Williams, I didn’t add any clear. I’m in California so I’m limited on what I can use. I painted outside so I would definitely like to sand and buff it. The paint instructions say to only sand the spots that need to be sanded with 2000 then 3000 grit. Do you think I will have an issue if I block the whole thing with 2000 then 3000 grit then polish? Or should I stick with just sanding the dust spots and only polish the whole thing? Orang peel isn’t bad but I would like to try to flatten it out a bit more.

In my opinion it's not great to sand SS a lot. If it was mine to do, I'd hit the bad spots briefly then go over the whole thing lightly with 3000. If you need it to be perfect, it would have been best to clear it wet-on-wet with one of Sherwin's compatible clears, then there would be plenty of material to work with.

Thank you. I did 5 coats of SS. I did end up sanding with 2000, 3000, then I polished with McGuires 105 and 205. It came out ok. Not amazing but ok. There are little specs in it. Almost looks like it got hit with tiny rocks…. Maybe that’s just the nature of painting outside? I could clear it. I was just trying to keep things simple since it was my first time spraying.

I can't tell from the images what that is. It's likely to have been fisheyes. Were there tiny, circular shiny spots left when you were done sanding?

No. Nothing like that. Not a run, sag, or fisheye. It went on perfect. Best way I can describe it is tiny tiny rock chips. Like you got behind a big rig hauling pebbles on the freeway. I only bought a pint of the SS so I may try a pint of base/clear and see how that comes out. I do like the way the SS looks on this truck, kind of old. Overall I’m happy with it. I may just be being too picky for a first time paint job sprayed under a tree in a breeze.

You might try and get a really clear, close-up picture of the problem so the pros here can help you.

I really am trying. Not easy to capture. I took some in the sun. It does look nice in the sun, not sure I have anything to complain about. I zoomed in, you can kind of see. Maybe they are fisheyes? I cleaned the heck out of the panel before painting. Perhaps a bit less fluid flow next time.

If there were depressions in the painted surface, you would have been able to see them very clearly after color sanding because they would have been out of reach of the sandpaper. If that was not the case, then maybe something happened during the polishing process. Maybe somebody knocked it off the stand and put it back while you weren't looking. It could be a million things.

I can't tell what is wrong from the photos.

Could it be solvent pop? OP stated he applied five coats. How much flash time between coats?. Perhaps the last couple of layers hadn't flashed completely and after cutting it released the trapped solvent?

Ah. That’s interesting. The paint instructions said 10 to 15 minutes between coats. I timed it pretty carefully but maybe another 5 minutes between coats next time.

I am not one of the pros. If it's 10-15 minutes minimum, I would wait a little longer. Make sure to use the correct SW activator and if you use reducer or retarder make sure it is high quality. I downloaded and opened it with the Windows photo program and it looks like it was dirty.
