Sanding metallic Imron

I am putting some small lower quarter patches on a '66 Mustang and will be blending the clear at the top edge of the quarter panels. The car was painted 20 years ago with black Imron (no clearcoat) and the "custom" painter added metalflake "until it looked right". It is not the big flake but it is larger than what is common today on late model cars. My concern is how to sand the blend areas. If I use 600/800 will it scratch the colors off of the metalflake in the single stage? Could I get away with a gray scrotchbrite and some scuffing paste? Thanks.

I going to show my age here but what we always did was not to sand the blend area but buff that whole panel with a cutting compound and a wool cutting pad, clean whole panel with wax and grease remover and blend away.
Never have seen one of those blends fail long term.

Cutting compound was always the standard when wanting to lightly clean and abrade a surface, especially for open blends, and it still works today, though it has two main drawbacks. First, it can sling stuff and get messy (not real good if you are in the booth and forgot to prep the blend), and second, you have to clean the panel really well after because the compound leaves both powder and solvent residue.

We've been using gold scotchbrite pads and waterborne for quite a while now, no mess, and makes a nice super clean lightly dulled finish that takes paint real well. I'd still use compound in a pinch, but only if we were out of gold and white scotchbrite.

Thanks, Barry. I would not of thought of doing it that way. Hopefully the Universal clear will bite in and we will move on. Much appreciated for sharing your experience !
