Sanding IC with 600/800 vs 400

I use IC on wood vases as a sealer, let cure for an hour and then a few more coats as a base for SPI CC. My process has been to sand the IC with 400 with my ROS then go over it with a maroon pad prior to spraying CC. Today I sanded with Assilex 800 then used the maroon pad. My 5" 400 discs are not the best for sanding/prepping finishes since I primarily use them on bare wood. The 800 (will try 600 when I get some) left a much better surface as expected and is easier to manage re sanding through potential but not sure if it leaves a rough enough surface for the CC to adhere properly. Question - will sanding back the IC with 600 or 800 leave a surface that the CC will bond to properly?

Sorry if answered elsewhere. I searched and couldn't find a thread that answered it for me.

what don said.

the only reason you need to sand it at all on wood is to smooth it out and knock off all the grain fibers sticking up. its not for adhesion at all. you really dont need to marron pad anything either as that doesnt smooth out anything. it only dulls the surface you have. sanding with paper will knock things smooth. foam hand pads work well also.

Thanks! Guess I'm just paranoid about having any "shiny" spots on the IC that might show under the CC so I go over it with the pad to get where I might have missed with the ROS.

yeah it doesnt work that way. once you put clear on you dont see the surface gloss of the product below. since intercoat clear is not clearcoat and its a basecoat with no chemical resistance, once you spray a solvent clear over it, it will reflow a little anyway and the clear will bite into it.
