Sanded through to my base. Need some help

Hello all.
I’ve been working on a 1971 Dodge Dart for a couple years.
I have it in SPI universal clear, and wet sanded and polished it last fall. It came out pretty good, but I had an area on the passenger quarter that was bothering me. I had a small area that I didn’t do a good enough job on the body work and it had a very slight wave. Very subtle, but it would wave at me from certain angles and was driving me nuts.
today, I made the decision that I couldn’t live with it.
I went out and started blocking it with some 600 wet. Using a light at an angle, I believe I have it worked out. I can follow the reflection and it is nice and linear throughout the panel.
unfortunately, I broke through the clear in a couple areas. I kind of figured this would happen, but I had to flatten the panel.
i have DuPont chromabase in Mopar B3 blue under the universal clear. I have a half quart left from when I shot the car.
I know I need to blend in some base before I reclear the area.
A couple questions, please:

-I’m assuming even though I have the paint that I shot last fall, I will need to do a blend technique, as this color is difficult and I’m in the last 1/2 quart of a gallon.
Should I try a wet bed technique, or just do a couple light coats in the area I broke through to the base?

- I’m assuming I need to take the entire quarter to 1500 and then re-clear the entire panel. Should I soft mask the quarter at the top hard line, or take the clear to the trunk rail and blend the clear in the c pillar?

- is 1500 what I want under my base blend and re-clear?

Here’s a couple pics of where I broke through.

thanks a million for any help. I’m a frequent lurker, but don’t post much.
Rob

A coupe pics of the car, in general. This is my first car job. I’ve done two boats.
Overall, I’m happy, but the area on the quarter was killing me.

First off, nice job! That car has a nice hard edge at the top of the quarter I would use if I had to blend it. Ideally, you would clear both quarters and the roof, but I can understand not wanting to do that. Taping the edge with a soft edge tape would be the key to not letting it show. 1500 is too fine to clear over, IMO. I would rather see you go over it with 800, do your blend and clear it. A couple light coats over the burn throughs for coverage, and then a blend out to soften the color edge should work. A wet bed also works well on those type of jobs because the intercoat will show any "ringing out" from the burn through, and allow a lttle more sanding in that area if needed, before putting color on it.

Thanks for the help!

is the best intercoat a DuPont clear base?
Im assuming I can buy some base with no pigment for that application.

would you guys go that route, of just try to blend it dry?

I think I’m going to take your advice and clear the quarters and top, so I don’t risk a foul up where the new clear meets the clear that’s on the car. I hadn’t considered that.

thanks again, guys!
Rob

SPI 2020-4 intercoat quart. $37. Works great. Hard to say if it would be needed, but I would probably use it in your situation. Just makes it easier and is sandable if you have a ringing issue.
