SANDBLASTING ADVICE

I have a friend of mine that is an engine builder. He had a machine shop down here for 30+ years, but got remarried and moved to western Oklahoma. He told me freshly machined parts down here would rust overnight, in the shop, without protection. In Oklahoma, those same parts could sit in the corner on the floor for days with no signs of rust. My point is, the environment controls the rate. Obviously, the sooner you can epoxy it, the better, but only with enough heat.

My trunk lid which has been recently sanded ( not blasted ) has not flash rusted yet and it's been 8 days unprotected sitting in the garage. Today I did a super clean on it with spi's waterborne wax and grease remover. Let that sit in the sun for a couple of hours. Wrapped the trunk lid in some clean blankets and brought it in the house and am currently storing it in one of the spare bedrooms until warn enough weather allows me to paint it. Right now in southwest Missouri, we are around 65-70 degrees during the day but, still have night time lows in the mid to high 40's. Next Wednesday they are calling for a 32* night time low. I'm pulling my hair out I want to spray epoxy so bad.

Must resist the temptation.

in the summer here its so humid that if you were to blast something like a motorcycle frame, maybe 20-25 min job, its already rusting before your done blasting. its all about that humidity level. if its low it could sit for days and not rust.

I've had these door hinges and other metal parts sitting on my workbench in my garage now for well over a year after being blasted. Zero signs of rust. If you can keep moisture off the metal (ie store inside) you can have an extended period before needing to prime.

Jim, is your shop air conditioned or highly insulated?

No air conditioning, well insulated but summer doors are wide open. In any case im talking blasting outside. Its usually 95% humidity and you can actually watch the rust form here in the summer. You have to blast then put it right in the booth for epoxy
