This SPI Red Chevy is owned by Tim in Alabama, he has owned this car 30 years since high school, about 7-8 years ago he restored it and put a 502 in it and updated the whole car.
Once a year when in this area he and his wife will stop by the plant and I will say this car was perfect in every way.
Him and his wife were driving about 35 MPH when an unlicensed girl with no insurance in a 2008 Mazda crossed the center line doing 65-70 MPH and hit them head on.
Every one is OK but the car speaks for itself and is now owned by Grundy Ins.
The 502 was split, the transmission was busted and the rear frame on right had side is sticking out about 6 inches, Tim said not one body panel is useable. PART_1421264496203.jpeg

I feel like there should be a way where you cannot register a car without proof of insurance, this is ridiculous and happens way too often.

Amazing they got out without major injuries. Sad to see a car that nice get destroyed by some irresponsible person.

The important thing is, they are alive and well. Did they comment on whether or not they were satisfied with the way Grundy handled the claim?

My wife and I lived in Australia for two years and had to pay around $500 to register our new Toyota. We didn't need proof of insurance because registration included basic liability insurance. Collision and comprehensive was our choice but cost extra. Most of the uninsured drivers in the US just make the first insurance payment and then bail.

Heartbreaking to see their very special Chevelle destroyed but surviving a crash like that is just wonderful to hear.

Hes said the adjuster looked at car and wrote full amount of coverage, like he said he would never have sold the car for that amount but he , like he said picked the value to insure.
He has showed the car at the annual Moonshine car show in GA last three years and I can vouch for him many of people wanted to buy that car and could have easily grabbed over $100,000 for it as it was done right.

I think he thought like I always have, most likely if car in an accident he had plenty of coverage to fix, you usually figure with a collector car the accident will be minor hit because of the way it is driven and he owns a body shop, so that helps. I need to rethink my coverages.
I have the 57 insured for 70,000 but then again if with that car in an accident like his, not sure we would walk away. so under insure might not matter.
Of course then there is the stolen problem but when driving the 57 it is never out of my sight.

That's sad! Thousands of hours of work over the years I bet, I hope they start a replacement build soon!

Wow, I couldn't believe anyone walked away from that accident. I mean there are no airbags to deploy and the steering wheels back then didn't collapse or give way.
Amazing. I would thank God my wife and I were alive and that all was lost was the car.

Amen to that. I have turned down 12,000 more for my roadster than it is insured for. Someone once said that buying insurance is the only time in your life you intentionally bet against yourself.

At least it is insured for more than it cost me to build it.

You can double that now, Bob. You don't get much change out of $1000 now for rego which like you said, has to include third party insurance which is for personal injury and nothing to do with any vehicles.

It's amazing that they were not injured. Very very lucky. I've been in car accidents, and in the end they are just a car. It's a real shame about the car but I'd prefer to be alive and well.

Barry, when I first started reading your post I thought it was going to have a much worse ending, while it is a VERY sad story I was relieved to see that nobody was hurt. And after seeing those pictures I have no idea how anybody could have walked away from this. Hopefully they have it in them to build another one to enjoy!

There is no excuse for driving without a liscense or un-insured!!
