Runs when using Universal

Someone on Facebook is lamenting about getting runs when using Universal but not with Summit or Shopline brands. He's using a 1.5 Finishline.

How would you explain the difference in these vs Universal?
 
those are going to be lower solids clears and they are simply set up with a fast flash and or cure time. i personally always thought the universal was fast. that guy should try some sikkens hs+ lol. that stuff stays wet forever. in any case a higher solids clear will take more air psi and a good gun to break it up so you get a thinner coat. pretty sure he is putting it on too thick especially with a 1.5 and a lower end gun. if he had a sata 5000 in a 1.5 then thats a different story.
 
The biggest problem I see is that these guys watch a video and think, "how hard can that be?" So then they start pricing spray guns and think, "Wow, that one is $800 and this purple one is only $20. They looks the same so . . ." Then there is the sticker shock on paint and the same mentality kicks in, "Paint is paint so why not buy the cheaper one?"

Once they begin to paint their car multiple problems happen and it is then that they seek advice. Only it's too late because they have already wasted so much time and money on their "budget paint job."

When you tell them their gun is junk, their compressor too small, the paint they bought is garbage, etc. they get mad at YOU!

I can say as a newb who just finished his first paint job, I'm sure glad I found SPI products and this forum.
I am blown away with the quality of job I have produced in my garage, it's beyond what I had hoped.
It certainly wasn't "the easy way" but if you put in the effort you get the results.

It would be easy to fall in to the trap that @'68coronet R/T describes unfortunately.
 
I have to (want to) agree. Never touched a spray gun before July of this year. Went with the purple POS from HF, and knew right away that there are no short cuts in this hobby/business. The HF got me at least comfortable with the idea of spraying, so I went out and got a couple of quality guns. I can tell you there is no reason I should be laying down the epoxy primer as well as I do, other than I went with good equipment and good materials.

The local SPI dealer showed me a 69 Camaro he just finished using nothing but SPI (other than the grey stripes). It wasn't perfect by any means (he isnt a body shop, and isn't a painter), but if mine comes even close to that, I am going to be very happy.
 
You guys missed the real question, why is he not getting runs in the other clears?
(If it was the gun it wouldn't make a difference)
