Right way to prime a truck and finish out the frame

If you are doing a solid color like black, white, orange, viper red, medium red, or dark red. SPI has got you covered. They make terrific high quality basecoats in those colors for less than half the price of comparable PPG DBC or Sikkens AutoColor. Barry is a fanatic about quality so you know with SPI you are getting some of the best stuff out there. And paying much much less.

Standox, Spies Hecker, Glasurit, Sikkens have always been high quality. In general, european base has always been better than base from "the big three", IMO. PPG is overpriced and doesn't cover that great, and their lower lines are worse. Dupont never covered well, either, especially certain colors. Sherwin base (Ultra 7000) sprays easily and covers well, but will bite you if you don't let it dry completely before clear, you can't sand it, uses a special reducer and has gotten as expensive as DBC. That being said, there are good and bad qualities in all refinish products, but most can work if everything is done to the letter. I've sprayed at least 20 different basecoats in the last 30+ years, and none are far and away better than rest, IMO, but the top of the line bases from any company are what they base their reputation on, and are usually worth the money in the long run.
Thanks so much!! At least I know where to look now! Which one is easily available? And which one would you use? I know it’s personal preference and that’s fine. Thanks.

I’d love to use spi the whole way through but if the pics I’m looking at are the same orange they sell than it’s to light for me. I want like a Chevy orange.

I am tempted to use Sherwin Williams because there’s multiple stores by me and I already have a contractor account for house paint. Probably easiest if they have a good product?

Get Barry to send a sample of his orange, pictures are not a good representation of the actual color. If it is close I would go with his. If you must choose a different brand, a solid color is more forgiving, but orange and yellow are notorious for poor coverage and need a completely covered white base. Any dark spots will take a ridiculous amount of coats, which you should avoid. Sherwin Williams automotive paint is sold at different stores than house paint, and it has it's issues, (as mentioned above), but can work with careful attention to flash times. The big problem would be an issue in the base (dirt, bug, sand scratches, run, etc.), as you can not sand it. Probably not a good base for your situation. If Barry's base is lighter than you want, you could possibly tint it with one of his reds. Just a thought.

Ya I should steer clear of sherwin Williams. I’m definitely gonna make sure whole truck is primed white. I know spi orange is way to light for me. I’m not sure I feel comfortable trying to mix it myself though. Thanks for all the info!!

Automotive Art, Wanda, and Metalux also get thumbs up here.
Awesome! Thanks guys! I’m hoping for something I can order online. Any suggestions on websites to find any of these paints?

Just did a other job with motobase. I really have zero complaints with this brand at all. Coverage is great! Full coverage in 2 coats.

This is green over black sealer, 4 coats of Euro Clear, which i think is not my new Fav. Itll be sanded and buffed after its complete

Wow. Looks great!! I’ve actually found some better pictures of spi orange and have decided to go with that along with spi white for the two tone truck. I just need help deciding on what brand and model of spray guns to buy?

Someone stop me before I go to Harbor freight for my spray guns LOL are the top-of-the-line ones from there any good? I was also looking at a kit on Amazon by Devilbiss that has two guns in it?

Barry you’re the one with all the knowledge. What do you think?

They only reason I would buy the HF gun is for a one time use for a throw away gun, primer only. I started with the Devilbiss $100 kit. It works, but leaves a lot of dry spray at the edges of the fan. I only use it for epoxy primer now. I have since bought a Tekna Pro-lite and use the DeKups system. Way better gun. I'd skip the cheap gun and go for something better right out of the gate. There is a long thread here on buying a budget gun. To sum up that thread, it really comes down to 3 or 4 guns and they're all in the +/- $400 range. Tekna Pro Lite will do everything. Iwata LPH 400 great clear gun, but slower sprayer. Sata 5000RP great clear gun, hoses on the material. Also a few votes for the Tekna Copper. Spending an extra $200-300 on a gun is minuscule compared to what you will spend on time and materials to paint your truck.

I like a cheaper gun for primer, Vaper 2.2 or equivalent.

Then spend a bit more like MX442 has mentioned. I have an LPH400 and I am pleased with it.

This is the exact reasoning I used when budgeting for stuff like a gun. Sound advice in my opinion.

Thanks so much all of you for the info!! It really means a lot!! I found an iwata 400 for about $220 which I’m cool with for base and clear. I’ve read I should use it for epoxy also? What tip sizes do I need for each? Can’t I just use that gun and get a different tip for primer? If not what’s a decent primer only gun and what tip for 2k and or epoxy? Pretend I know nothing because that’s fairly accurate also I bought a 71 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 with almost 0 rust even on the frame and under body! I decided I’d really like to just scuff up and epoxy over? Seems like a waste to sadblast a rust free frame etc? What grit should I scuff paint to before epoxy if that’s ok? I included pics of under cab and bed. It’s clean!! I’m doing this on weekends and kinda hate to expose clean painted metal to the elements while I fart around for one thing. It’s in a big shop but still. Thanks in advance you guys are all great thanks for sharing your knowledge!
