Retarder

I've been experimenting with Euro and maybe I'm just expecting too much.....who knows. This is probably the best I got with Euro so far. It all buffs out in the end so its really a none issue other than stuff that is production work.

Very impressive. Glad you posted. The GM Black Saphire is indeed a beautiful color. I used it on my '57 Olds. I got a lot of nice comments.

John

I'll give you another nice comment John.
That is the best looking 4 dr I have seen.
I was admiring its looks when I noticed the line on the 1/4 panel, and thought---Wow, that's a 4 dr. I wonder why Olds was able to use the same roof as the 2 dr, and Chevy had to have a different roof than the 2 dr. Seems like more money for manufacturing the less expensive model.

Old soul asked if retarder added to universal would make it run more.
I don't have good answer cause i always run with/without.
If 68 wasn't getting bugs in his teeth atm & likely having time of his life, he'd chime in.

Thanks for bringing this over here, Eddie. Never did get a reply to my question if retarder would make Universal clear run easier, over in the "Orange Peel" thread. Maybe get a bite on this side.

My feeling is anytime you reduce viscosity or slow the product down, it will run easier. Right now I am having much more trouble trying to get it slick than worrying about runs, because of the heat. If I sprayed something in the winter mixed the way I am now (very slow hardener, no reducer, 3-4 oz. retarder per quart mixed, every coat), it would probably end up on the floor. Retarder for me is a necessity right now, can't imagine trying to spray without it.

The manual says to take it easy until you know how the product works because it will flow.

I haven’t noticed it running easier. I DO give it a little extra time between coats thinking that might help. Like in another thread with advice from shine, I cut back the fluid knob- move faster with 75% overlap- add about 1-2 caps of retarder.... no runs and 1500 will take out any orange peel I get

LOL, thanks. Shaving the door handles really helped and I never rolled the windows up unless I had too.

I had one guy talk to me for several minutes about buying it before he reallized it was a more door. He kind of got huffy and said "This things a four door!" I said, yup, always has been. :) Made him mad and he just walked away.

Sometimes I wonder where the car went. Never saw it after it sold at the Shades of the Past about 16 years ago.

Forgive me if I hi-jacked the thread.

I am not a professional by any means but have found the following method to work without causing runs.
- to have the gun set up properly (i.e. up the air pressure enough so the clear is atomizing properly)
- spray the first coat with no reducer and let it flash until you can touch the wet clear on masking tape and it doesn't string
- spray the second coat with no reducer and let it flash as above.
- spray the third coat with retarder added and shut off the fans once the cloud has cleared
The final coat will basically melt into the previous coats.

Is it the right way to do it? Not sure but it works for me.
These are all photos as sprayed and before buffing. Most are Euro Clear and the last UV.

Thanks for the replies texasking, AAE, Dave and Coronet. 90 degrees in the shop today so it's a good time to give retarder a try.
It's nice to have some percentages and techniques from experienced users to refer to.

..."as sprayed" looking good there, Coronet!
