ok, pardon my ignorance on this one. my buddy has a MINT 84 mustang gt. someone at some point painted the drivers side door after it damaged, The car is red and they painted the entire door and it is slightly off. He talked to me about repairing it and I said the only way I know how to do it is with base/clear, blend the fender and qtr panel and clear it all.

Is this even possible with urethane on top of factory original lacquer?

Do a solvent wipe test, if lacquer someone did it as the factory did not.
If it is sand the lacquer off and do what you suggested with the base clear.

What type of paint did Ford use in 84? I honestly assumed it was lacquer due to the year.

I don't know the answer exactly what they used but the manufacturers all went thru transitions from acrylic lacquers, enamels etc. to various base/clear coat systems. I suspect then as now what the manufacturer uses is not the same as what is available to the refinish market. In the 70's and into the 80's a lot of acrylic lacquer was used to spot, blend or panel repair in the body shops.
Here is an article, doesn't go into deep detail but still interesting to read: http://www.bodyshopbusiness.com/behind-the-paint-history/
