Recommend epoxy or 2k over poly primer

Have completed blocking poly primer with 120 then 180. Just wanted to find out best primer to apply over the sanded poly. Would like some fill for final blocking. Is 180 grit scratches ok for priming over? This is a fairly high end custom job. Thanks

I personally really like epoxy over the poly for several reasons. I like the sealing properties of the epoxy over polyester or filler, and usually there is at least a couple of metal spots, anyway. I also like the sheen of the epoxy, which shows any imperfections much better than 2K. If you feel you need the fill of the 2K, I would still spray at least 1 coat of epoxy over the poly first, but the epoxy can be used as a filler with multiple coats. 180 is fine under either primer.

180 is perfect for epoxy or 2k urethane primer.
It's done both ways and myself. At this point, I go to 2k primer for my final blocking.
You may be good enough to finish with epoxy.

Of course, if time doesn't matter, epoxy would be the next perfect application.
Either way is right, your choice.

Hey Barry,

When you say epoxy is the next perfect application, do you mean before the 2k primer?

Thanks.

He is saying that for ultimate toughness, longevity, etc, using only epoxy throughout would be ideal. 2K urethane builds more and cures quicker which is why it is a popular choice. If you have time and your car is relatively straight use epoxy. If you need more filling and need/want to get it done quicker use 2K. (over your initial coats of epoxy)

Thanks Chris.

I ask because I'm at a similar point. I just finished blocking the poly primer (after epoxy, filler, more epoxy) and everything looks good. I'm trying to decide whether my next step should be epoxy or 2k, or both. :)

Based upon your info, and Barry's thumbs up, I'll go with epoxy and leave it in that for now as it's going to sit for a while as I work on the other panels.

Thanks again.
Ken

Thanks everyone for this information! I was wondering today if I needed urethane 2k primer. Shrinkage is my main concern, so I wanted to avoid it if possible. Looks like I can!
