Hello, Newbe bodyworker has questions - see pics. 68 Camaro with mini tubs and rusted wheel wells. I wanted to use opportunity to get more tire clearance to the outside so this is what I did and where I'm at. First I made a gage to know where existing lip was, I drew a straight line (laser) on existing outer and cut outer along laser line, added 5/8" spacers for new gage location and fit new trimmed outer to match with series of washers to hold shape, used quarter trim panel (AMD outer and trim) as needed for fitting between outer and OEM quarter to retain near stock look and shape, held everything in place with washers and tacked, removed outer for access for planishing, mig welding and dolly work, made templates for matching the other side. I did both sides the same way and my templates show the two sides are within an 1/8" the same. Took a long time but so far, it looks like my vision. Now questions - 1) can I wire wheel the inside around weld line and hit with 80 grit paper to brush on SPI epoxy black and add 3M seam sealer?; 2) since there will be small areas in the weld that can't be reached with paper, will the epoxy stick?; 3) will the shrink marks on the outside around the weld seam need special attention since they will not have DA 80 grit scratches before spraying epoxy?; 4) what is best way for adhesion of epoxy on welded areas for long lasting results? After epoxy, the plan is to smooth with Rage Gold and Rust Defender before paint - any thoughts? Any advise is surely appreciated for this rookie. Thanks in advance.
