Pro-Spray Base Coat

If I understand correctly, Pro-Spray gets a good recommendation on this forum. I am using SPI Primers and Clearcoat. Is there an advantage to using a water base base coat with these SPI products? What is the advantage of using a water base base coat opposed to a petroleum based base coat? Is it not just another learning curve to use a water base base coat? Im doing this as a hobby and may paint 10 more projects in my lifetime.

Maybe I misunderstood something I read before. I thought Pro-Spray was a water base Base Paint.

Thanks Rusty, looks like I overlooked they sell both. Thanks for pointing that out.

From what I've read, waterborne paint is a whole other ball game. I struggle with painting enough without throwing in a new set of rules to remember! Someday...

Exactly what I thought, but I did not realize I had the option of solvent base coat at Pro-Spray. Now if I can just get the color. Its a 1956 Ford F-250 and the Paint Code listed on the door threshold says the cab is U and the trim (bumper, grille, and wheels) is code E. Those codes are Meadow Green and Snowshoe White. I was told by a PPG distributer that code E is Colonial White, not Snowshoe White. Got to do more research. I did email Pro-Spray as well.

It sure sounds like if you are familliar with water based paints you will be fine. All the issues I have been reading about is when people are not allowing the solvents to fully evaporate before shooting the clear. Not having solvents in the water borne seems like a win.

Shine....I know nothing about water base. What is the difference between a solvent paint booth and a water paint booth?

with water you have to have a lot of air movement. much more than solvent. some older shops had to buy fan towers for the booth.

i'll hang up my guns first .................

I never really saw the advantage of water base when the primers and top coats are mostly solvent based.

Thanks Steve, I got the codes all documented and contacted Pro Spray. They have both colors. Now, Pro Spray, RM-Diamont, Wanda, or just go fishin. Im using SPI primers and clear. I hang out in the Autobodystore.com forum and for a long time have had it drilled into my head, "you get what you pay for". I believe there are exceptions to that.

I'm sticking to solvent until I have no choice.. But my thoughts are that by the time they make us go to water they will have it figured out.. I don't like the idea of the fans, but the idea of no solvents is appealing.

By the time I get three projects done I wont be able to do it a lot longer, so solvent is gonna be my choice. And there are some good guys at autobodystore.com. They are the ones who put me on to SPI. They have a lot of good things to say about SPI.

water based is not much different, other than clears, clears spray white, but I dont think anyone is considering swapping clears. The reason for more fan is simply specific gravity, water is heavier than thinner. Also makes your cup heavier as you are spraying.
