Whats the best way to get paint to stick to these without adversely affecting the "grain"?

I suppose I need to get the rattle can repaint from 1980 off at least, and potentially all the paint from the factory?

Then reduced epoxy then color?

What year…is it metal or fiberglass?

On my Mustangs I wipe it down with urethane reducer until all the paint is gone.

For plastic parts I scuff with Scuff Stuff to scuff and clean, then quick spray with adhesion promoter, followed by the SEM vinyl dye National Parts Depot sells that they’ve had custom formulated for correct color. Their colors are dead on.

If it’s metal parts, I’ve used a thin etching primer prior to applying NPD’s interior lacquer. I’d like to know of something more robust than etch primer and haven’t considered reduced epoxy (though I’d be afraid it would still have too much solid content), but interior panels I’ve done 9 years ago with this method still look perfect.

I paint the interior panels, armrests, etc. with a quality base coat.

The mix ratio below came from RM Diamont but I have used it with many different brands with great success.

INTERIOR (no clear or flex agents needed)

Mixing Ratio Instructions 1 part Diamont basecoat
10% hardener (DH42 or DH46)
75% - 100% UR reducer
