hey guys i need advice. i am getting ready to paint my tanneau cover but have a question. this cover has a textured surface that mimmicks leather. how do i prep it so the epoxy grabs? it has a blue color on top, not sure if its gel but for sure it is not paint. this is on my 73 el camino. any advise will be appreciated.

Hey, Joe from ECC forum. I'd clean it with alcohol based wax & grease remover & give it a good scuffing with red pads, & reclean. Keeping the grain or wanting to smooth it out?
From what I've seen, the Gaylord covers didn't take too much sun before deteorating..

scuff pad or good old fashioned steel wool. We ended up sanding off all the texture on the Jeep top we did since it was worn away on the corners anyway though.

If I was trying to preserve the texture I would use a grey scuff pad with warm soapy water like dawn dish soap. I normally scuff with presta scuff stuff, but with light texture like you talking about you want to be as least aggressive as possible, When you go to paint it your going to want to do with thin coats and as little material as possible. If it flows or builds much you will loose the look of the texture. that's been my experience over the years painting textured interior pieces.

Exactly, gray pad, clean really good, let set at least one hour after cleaning and shoot one coat of epoxy mixed with 50% reducer added for adhesion but no filling.
