prep before primer

hey guys, i am getting ready to spray spi epoxy primer on my motorcycle. my question
is i have all of my parts sanded with 180 grit, is this ok our should i use a lower grit.
these are the steps i was thinking about.

panels sanded with 180
clean panels with spi cleaner
adhesion promoter on plastic parts
spray 2 coats epoxy
spray 2 coats 2k primer wet sand with 400 (solid color)
spray epoxy sealer
spray base
spray clear

thank you bill

It looks good to me. I assume you know for sure that the type of plastic you are working with needs adhesion promoter? Also, the adhesion promoter can be blended 5:1 with the primer hardener for superior results.

hey, crashtech thanks for the reply, the plastic parts are abs. i think i will add hardener from the 2k primer also would that change the flash time. this will be the first time spraying plastic parts. thanks for the tip bill

ABS usually doesn't require adhesion promoter for automotive paint products, I've seen people melt grilles when they get carried away with solvents.

I have always used specific gravity checks to determine whether promoter is needed. If you can find a spot on the back of the panel where a small sliver of material can be removed, cut it with a blade and try to sink it in water, making sure that no air bubbles are adhering to the sample

If it's a floater, it needs promoter.

thanks for the help guys, i will try the floater test i have an extra fairing maybe i will try a test run when my paint arrives.

thanks again bill

Put a little lacquer thinner on it and I bet it will soften/melt, abs doesn't need an adhesion promoter.

used the "floater" test today an after a non floater i watched it dissolve in to the thinner lol absolutely love the the quote crash laugh every time i think about it!
