Preferred Media

Coal slag contains heavy metals and is even slightly radioactive. Not enough to be harmful, but I found that an interesting fact. Crushed glass may not be marketed by traditional blast media sellers, but it can sometimes be found by looking up recyclers. Usually there is too much glass for recyclers to sell, so some of them crush it and sell it as media.

All I can attest to is that it produces a very fine dust, especially after being recycled a couple of times. Blasting outside thanks to Barry's advice and very glad I did.

It does a great job cleaning up the metal.

Crushed glass? Looks great, part # shows nice.
And i can't imagine blasting indoors unless you're in a bubble.

crushed glass breaks down fast so it creates alot of dust and not really meant for a cabinet or to be recycled. it will clog a cabinet vacuum in no time. you can reuse it once or twice but not beyond that. for what the stuff cost, i have never found it to be worth my time to collect it and reuse it. i was buying it by the pallet which is 40 bags / 2000lbs for $400.

I ordered three 40# boxes of crushed glass (40-70 grit) from eBay supplier at $32.90 each with free shipping. This was to experiment with a 20# pressure blaster a friend had given me.
It works decent but runs out of media fairly quickly and collecting it back up, running it through the screened funnel back into the blaster takes way too long for my liking.
Got a quote today from a dustless blasting place 2 hours a way. They wanted $850 to do the stripped shell and front fenders. Plus they wouldn't blast the interior of the roof skin for fear of warping it.
Sooooo, it looks like I am going to be doing this myself. :(

I use glass beads with some aluminum oxide mix in my blast cabinet. Purchased from Zoro.com. More money but I can see better in the cabinet and a lot less dust to contend with.

i did the same. used crushed glass in my cabinet long ago then switched to white alum oxide. no more clogged vacuum and i can see everything im doing now.

Alum oxide is harder than glass so it cuts faster, and that works great in a cabinet with suction feed blasting.

Too windy to blast outside today so I put the upper control arms through the blast cabinet.

If the wind keeps up I will start on the lower control arms tomorrow. I ordered a set of weld on sway arm brackets so I can keep the lower control arms I already have and adapt them to accept the sway bar. Correct used LCAs were $175 each plus shipping and would still need rebuilding so I chose this option which will cost me $61.15 for the brackets shipped and some welding wire.

Nice! :) Tell me, reduced epoxy 1st coat?
I generally only reduce epoxy for sealer or parts that have a texture to them. In this case the threads will get just a light coat and everything else two coats. They should almost look like they have been powder coated.
