Polyester primers

Just wondering if anyone here tried the new Evercoat polyester primers? I have used a couple of gallons of the new finish sand 4:1, and the traditionnal featherfill G2. They also have a featherfill (not G2), has anyone tried that also. I don't mind using featherfill G2, i just don't like the mekp hardener, 4:1 is a lot easier. Also the new ones have different catalyst speeds, but the kind of work I use this on is never rushed, so I don't need anything fast.

We have had good results with Fiber Fill and Super build they are both 4:1 mix and build well. They sand reasonable for poly primers.

g2 here. the regular featherfill is the really super old formula from 20 years ago. sux compared to g2. i tried the superbuild a long time ago when it came out. i thought it sanded really hard compared to g2 but some guys on here said its not like that anymore. not sure. g2 has always worked great for me so thats what i use. i have yet to use the fiberfill. i know someone who has and thought it was really good but he said it sanded really hard.

Evercoat has their new "Edge" line out. They have two 4:1 poly primers that are "supposedly" DTM. One is called Smooth the other is called High Build. The Evercoat rep stressed to us that they are both DTM and eliminate the need for epoxy. Not sure that I believe that but I have used both and they are miles ahead of G2 and Slick Sand. They have a longer pot life, they don't gradually thicken in the gun which is one of the things I didn't like about conventional poly primers. Pot life is reasonable in hot weather. Both sand very good and both build well. In the case of the High Build, I could only spray it with my Sata 2.5 poly primer gun. It is extremely high build. Like I said they work good enough that I won't be switching back to G2.

In the past I have always applied SPI regular build primer over G2 for finish sanding. Are these newer poly primers any different in that regard? Can they be finished to the point of be ready to paint?

i would have no problem doing it even on g2 as long as i shot a sealer down before base. i would not put base directly on it

The Evercoat tech told me once that at least a 2k sealer should be applied on top for better results. Before I heard that we painted over it on production jobs, and didn't have a problem, but it wasn't a regular procedure, we used the polyester stricktly for large areas that had filler. I'm not chemist, but I believe this products to be like a finishing putty that is sprayable, so technically, we always prime over putty.

Last year at a local supplier event, Evercoat was there and never mentionned the Edge line, or their US-Canada website have the products listed.

Chris,
Will the smooth shoot okay using a 1.8 tip?

Should work just fine. That's the size I've used when shooting it. The High Build "says" it can be shot with a 1.8-2.2 but I found that my Sata poly primer gun (2.5) was the only thing that would work decent.

Has anybody given any of these new poly primers a try? I have a project coming up and I am planning to use one of them.

I have used Super Hi build-Evercoat quite a bit the past 5 years with real good performance.. You need a fire hose to get it on (I have Sata 2.2) but hey, really effective. I go straight to 80 grit blocking everything, then to my 2k. Ever coat says epoxy not required prior to poly but I always epoxy first.

Chad I've used several gallons of the 2 Evercoat Edge products, http://www.theevercoatedge.com/image...mer_8.2014.pdf and http://www.theevercoatedge.com/image...mer_8.2015.pdf

I like them better than conventional poly primers. The 4:1 mix ratio takes the PITA factor out of mixing it, and they spray better. Takes longer for the product to start thickening up whereas slick sand would start to thicken as soon as it was activated. Build with the Smooth is about the same as Slicksand. The HighBuild builds more than slick sand. You can also combine the two if you want. They also offer 2 catalyst choices. They are what I'll use from now on.

You have to keep on your toes with the slick sand, it will set up on you in the gun.

Chris, I bought a Sagolla 3300 Pro for spraying slick sand. I have never used it. Im thinking I might try the Evercoat Edge, (smooth or high build) in place of Slicksand. Im wondering if I should trade out my 2.8 for a 2.2. What do you think?

Im having trouble finding an on line distributer of Edge high build or smooth. What is the difference between the two products?

I would like to try it also, but when I called my jobber they had never heard of the edge line. They keep slicksand and the spies polyester, I just wanting to try something better than slicksand which is what I use now and the spies is a nice product it just cost to much.
