Painting Stripes

What is the best strategy for this? I have the hood/trunk of and hanging so I spray the orange. Now to add black stripes that go up the hood to the cowl down the dutchmans panel and on to the trunk. The obvious way is to wait till it dries (over night?) reinstall the hood/trunk tape the stripes then remove the hood/trunk rehang then paint the black. After which hit it with UC. Is there a better way that does not include removing the hood/trunk as much?

Yea, wishful thinking…. How long should I wait to be messing with handling and taping on the base color? Overnight?

overnight is best in my opinion, we tried to do it within 2 hours and everything looked fine but as soon as the clear went on we were able to see the adhesive of the 3/8th tape at the edge of the stripe. Was not noticeable at all until the clear was on.

Dont know if its a factor, but if your color is a metallic, its been mentioned that it would be best to lay down one or two coats of clear prior to masking for stripes. That way if stripe color bleeds under the tape you can address it without effecting the metallic. Just a thought.

Is base over clear a bad idea? You could shoot a thin layer of clear to seal the tape then shoot the stripe color

Not sure I understand what you mean by clear to seal the tape.

You could look into getting some of the spi intercoat clear to seal the basecoat stripes then tape over it. Two coats of the intercoat 10/15 mins apart and you will be able to mask it in half an hour and not worry about leaving smudges or tape line residue.

you can intercoat clear it but honestly your working with solid colors so its a waste of time and material. let the orange sit overnight or atleast most of the day then reassemble and lay out your stripes. to clean off basecoat you can use mineral spirits and also glass cleaner.

Not the SPI 700 and 710 Wax and Grease Removers?

You definitely don't want to use the 700 on basecoat, it will create white stains, streaking.

I believe Jim is referring to the aerosol glass cleaner type, is gentle on the basecoat yet it has some cleaning strength.

Yes do not use 700. Its too strong for base. 710 is ok but ammonia free glass cleaner works best. Doesnt have to be aerosol.

You can clear iver decals but honestly, your painting the car and its so much more professional to paint them on. I have had customers supply me with vinyl masking kits for the stripes from phoenix before. Complete garbage. Totally unusable for everything except to get measurements off of. Put the hood on, lay out the stripes by hand and paint them on. Youll he way happier with results.

Opinion from the experts. 68 Coronet. Plan to have a wide center stripe down center of hood and trunk with 2 narrower on each. Recommendations for the width of the center stripe, the strip of base coat to reveal and the outer 2 stripes? I am thinking 12", 3/4", 2". Is there a formula that has a better visual appeal than others?

I waited overnight and I can see the tape markings in the orange…. How do I get this cleaned up before clear?
