painting stinger hood using single stage black

I've painted these stinger hoods before but always with base/clear. I wanted to use singe stage black on my upcoming project but also need to paint the red stinger so trying to figure out the best way to go about it.
I could spray black, then singe stage red, then clearcoat over everything. This would be easy with the hood, but I would also need to clear the whole hood surround area because of the tip of the stinger on the nose. Would there be any visible difference between some panels being only single stage and some single stage with clear over top?
Or maybe I'll need to use single stage black/red and clear over top. Any thoughts?

Is black ss and black base the same color black?
Don, what clear did you put over the hood? Did you see any difference between the hood and the adjacent panels when all was done?

Guys, we Ss and clear all the time and works great.
My point was that I did not state right is that big block hood is a nightmare to tape correctly.
My concern with SS is creeping under the fine tape lines.
I rather fix my lines and edges with base on there than Ss.
Just saying.

Not too pretty. They used lacquer. Taped off the black and sprayed the red with a ragged edge and a little bit of overspray thrown in :)
The tapes weren't that great back then, better materials available today. Could have been worse if they used some sort of stencil (over and over)!
I actually did stencils once on someone's Army jeep restoration for the "authentic look". That was so long ago I doubt I could find pictures (from film, pre digital).

On the two "survivor class," Vettes I did shot in lacquer, and no buffing is allowed.
As wanted to kook like a factory job.
Both cars were lacquer using Dtl105, and no buffing allowed.

I was told in the 70s by a guy that worked at chev that they had later on a template that could be used one time, dont know if true, but the guy taught me a lot, so tend to believe him.
