Painter wants to use Master Series as a primer under black epoxy

I have a frame getting blasted now, and my painter wants to use Master Series silver primer under the SPI Epoxy. The Master Series is a moisture-cured urethane.

He has been doing the Master Series for years, specifically to address what he believes is better rust protection, particularly as the car is in the northeast (NJ). In addition, it should fill some of the pitting in the chassis, although there is minimal pitting. The car is going to be a nice driver, with an occasional show.

One thing to note is that I hate getting rust witness lines on a frame. The frames on these cars (1960 corvette) are notorious for being wet noodles, and they always seem to get the rust witness lines at the frame seams. I want to eliminate this as much as possible.

So, my questions are two fold:

1. Is there any reason to do this step as opposed to just the SPI chassis black

and

2. If this is a good idea, will it cause any problems with the SPI epoxy?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

i would ditch master series.
SPI epoxy primer is an excellent rust inhibitor.
get frame to bare metal 2 med wet coats of SPI epoxy then u can use SPI reg or high build primer and block it then seal again with SPI epoxy and base/clear as you wish

With black por or silver por SPI has nothing that will work with it.
Don't waste your money on SPI.
Stick with that system.

Barry - if I am reading this correct, you do NOT recommend using the Master Series under SPI epoxy. Is this correct?

I have no experience with Master Series, and have had good result using SPI products in the past. I don't want to be the guy questioning the painter I just hired, but think that SPI would know better what works with their products.

From your comment, it seems as if the Master Series is like a POR product. I have not had much luck with POR as a coating.

Ain't nothing better then spi epoxy on clean bare metal is what you'll learn here.
The boss answered your question. Teach your painter something.

por is a moisture cure urethane. basically the same as your master series. you really dont want to use any mcu. the frame should be coated in black epoxy. doesnt matter if its spi epoxy or some other brand but epoxy is the only thing that should go on. putting epoxy over a mcu is completely pointless.

after your frame is blasted i woulds soak it in phosphoric acid mix then rinse well. blow dry and use 3 coats of epoxy. first coat hit all the hidden areas and seams first.

After reading through the other posts and the site, it looks like straight SPI over blasted metal is the way to go. We will be placing an order sometime next week.

Thanks for the guidance.

in defense of MC the silver is excellent for stock trailers or around the farm. great for pipe fence . but with that said i use epoxy in my work .
