Paint gun

Has anyone used the new Devilbiss Tekna Clear coat gun ?

It’s a great gun, better atomization than most and you better like painting fast because it’s a bit of a hoser. It’s my second favorite clear gun. 1.3 with HV20 aircap works for me and the 2100, 5100, 4100 SPI clears. If you have really big hands the handle may feel a little small so I’ve read from other people using it.

Can't speak for the "clear coat gun" but I do have a Tekna Copper 7E7 and it sprays very nice. Large fan and consistent results. Came with a 1.3 and 1.4 tip set.
68 Coronet R/T, I have the Copper gun too. I don't have much experience, but , I really like the Copper gun. I wanted the clear gun after seeing an ad. Got it on ebay for a heck of a deal.

Jorge, my Tekna clear coat gun arrived yesterday. It was supposed to come with 1.2, 1.3 1.4 tips. Unfortunately, they mistakenly boxed two 1.2 tips and a 1.3 tip. I've only used a 1.4 tip with my Tekna Copper, spraying base coat and UC. I see that you are using the 1.3. Do you think I'll be ok with the 1.3 spraying Universal Clear, or should I get the 1.4 ? Thanks

I’ve never had a problem laying down the Universal with the 1.3 and TE25 air cap. It puts out enough material that when I tried the 1.4 it seemed excessive and harder to dial in. Not a hint of iso clumping, solvent pop or die back if proper flash times are kept. I’m in Canada and only get to spray the 4100-1 though, I rarely ever reduce it.

I have used the Tekna copper 1.3 to spray Euro clear and it sprayed fine but Barry advised me to get an Iwata lph 400 or Sata jet 5000 for clear, I can say that Barry knows his product and spray guns very well. The Iwata lph 400 is an excellent gun with great atomization, The Sata jet 5000 rp with 1.3 is my favorite but both have their advantages. The Iwata is slower or not the hoser that the Sata is but I move pretty fast so the Sata fits me pretty well. I can say that Devilbiss, Iwata and Sata make fine spray guns and out of these you have to make your own decision. Sagola and Walcom also make respectable spray guns but I have no experience with them, Maybe you can visit a shop near you that will let you experiment with some of their spray guns before you buy one. Good luck with your purchase.

Just had a flashback after reading about the pressurized gun. Did any of you guys ever use a Mattson Atomiser? I used a pair for base and clear for years shooting PPG DBU,DBC base, 2020,2001,2002 clears and really loved the results I got. Very low overspray, very efficient, very even base application, slick clear, but a major PITA to maintain. I had to keep a box of spare everythings. We had a booth that shut the air off if someone opened the door, and with 5 or 6 psi in the cup, it would spray a nice stream down the side of the car really quick. Also happened a couple times stepping on the hose just right. I believe it only had a 1.0 or 1.1 needle but would spray the thicker materials fine by upping the cup pressure from 5, to 6 or 7. Think I still have a couple of these guns and lots of spare parts, but the last time I tried to use one, the high dollar regulator wouldn't work. If one drop of solvent backed up in the tube it was junk. Ah, the good old days!

I pulled this up from the dead because of the info on the LP400 air caps. How will the silver cap lay basecoat? Loved the speed of the LP400 silver on clear. But have seen multiple references to the LVB purple cap for metallic bases.

I have all 3 air caps, silver of, orange lvx and purple lvb...

Silver air cap is good for basecoating, lvx orange is much better , iwata says it does 95% of Basecoats and lvb is special , it is strange and weird animal, Iwata suggests it for only other 5% difficult pearl mettalics colors...it operates at 10 ,12 psi, gotta hold gun 4 inches from the panel, it has huge fan, slowww and basically, I own more than 15 spray guns and this is the “strangest “ air cap gun to use

So no, you don’t need that air cap,..I have used it only few times and it does require practice

I picked up a DeVilbiss FLG-5 with a 1.4 and a 1.8 needle and tip. Should be good for primer and base?
