Packing peanuts ban 2019

out of that nice list that lance wrote, i still say the corn starch are the best. in water those disintegrate into nothing in a few seconds when hosed with water. you can even eat'em lol. put one in your mouth and it just vanishes. not much more expensive either

could egg crate type foam be an option? the type of foam that is inside a gun case, I have a couple gun cases that have what they call pluck foam, they have pre cut squares that you pull off to form what ever your trying to secure. you could get a box that fits the dimensions of the product surrounded by foam. they also have different densities and materials to assist with the shock load from a drop. Or would that still fall into the outlawed material?

Not sure how the price compares but they have scrap foam in bulk too.

As a unit of comparison, let's consider the common hi-cube railroad box car, with an interior volume of around 7,480 cubic feet. To fill a boxcar with packing peanuts from the catalog vendor Uline at catalog prices would cost around $10,612.

There is a more environmentally friendly peanut, which solves the landfill problem but not the annoyance. Peanuts made of cornstarch break down under water and can be composted. However, this comes at a cost. The same quantity of cornstarch peanuts from Uline will set you back $11,370 at catalog prices.

Lance
That is an increase of just over 7%, it doesn't seem like much to me.

Our most logical option seems to be the cornstarch peanuts.
We ordered peants and in this order we ordered 40 bags to try again.
We have one inch foam cut for bottom of box, that will also be illegal
So back to old days where we put an inch of peanuts in box and set the material on top.
This foam elinination for the bottom
Will wipe out cost of the cornstarch.

As I read, it's illegal.

Are the cornstarch peanuts fattening?

What about the entrapped air plastic "bags"? Get those a lot from shippers and that would seem like it would cushion well.

Andy is the one that goes to dot training 2 weeks a year but "think "
Problem is chemicals and the 1 inch rule, not sure but think that's the reason.

In my research eggs, came up a lot, not sure about all city's but restaurants and egg packers were going to get killed in most city's.

Ask your box supplier about 1" medium light duty cardboard bottom insert or 1.25" for package police incase of slight crushing. Cornstarch nuts or brown paper for sides/top.
They should be aware of situation for other customers by now.

Might be best to call one of the suppliers of packing materials and see what they are replacing it with. I would surely think they would be a good resource for what will pass the new laws.

I just cant see the cornstarch being an option, if there is any moisture in the bag, the carton gets wet, thinner drips, they are going to dissolve?
Maybe just individual boxes to the size of your containers in a bigger box that is trimmed tightly might be cheaper than the hazmat cartons. But the other side of using the hazmat cartons is if you are ever questioned, what else can you possibly do than ship in cartons that have been certified for hazmat?

When we get military paint from Sherwin Williams, they tie it in a plastic bag and have the carton a tight fit. The other military sources use the haz mat cartons with the inserts that keep the round gallons separated. No paper, or peanuts of any kind. They must have figured out that there is alot of extra labor in dealing with peanuts to stop using a universal carton and ship alot of space.

If you want, I am sure we can all be guinea pigs and you can send product to us and we will let you know how it makes it. I will volunteer to try black epoxy primer, universal clear and super slow activator.

We are in, the white bags are the legal peanuts and we got 60 bag of pink illegal peanuts.
The 2 sizes of foam we have cut is getting low and won't be reordering.

Glad you're able to jump thru the pita hoops. Crush test cornstarch nuts.
What will replace cut styrofoam? Light duty pre cut 1" cardboard if it exists work?

We are talking to our box company now, may be to much cost.
Year's ago all we did was a layer of nuts and worked great.

A lot of delivery packages I get lately are waded with paper. McMaster-Carr uses a brown paper, not sure what weight. It would have to be large rolls/low cost. I have no idea how paper compares to peanuts for shipping. I know McMaster-Carr does a lot of shipping.
