Not spraying well

Anyone have a clue as to why my white primer is spraying so terribly? Ive got a 1:1 mixture of SPI primer and SPI hardener. I mixed primer very well prior to mixing with hardener. I carefully measured a 1:1 mix. Mixed well together. Let sit for 30 mins.

Substrate is an grey epoxy primer surface sanded well with a 150-180 grit. The surface was perfect. The previous primer perfect and laid down correctly.

Re-mixed well again and shot with my 1:4 primer gun. Crap did not atomize well at all. Tried all the setting on the gun. I reverted to my main primer gun with a 1.7 tip and same thing. I am at a loss. Any ideas would be great.

What gun and setting, pressure, distance? Temp?
6-8 inch temp of metal 68 70 ambient. Gun pressures 28-30 psi. Gun type the 1.4 is a Nico and the other is my old 1.7 primer gun forget where I got but I just did the whole car in grey with it no problem.

This is what she looks like right now. Awaiting white epoxy primer. Thought I’d start out on the doors and trunk first as a test.

well unreduced white epoxy...for a light coat that is typically what it looks like. if you want it smoother then add maybe 10% reducer. do not spray it with a primer gun. spray it with a good base gun. spray the first coat light, let flash for about 15 min then come back with a second coat slightly heavier.

Really this is typical? It’s a sputtering mess in my opinion. I plan on putting 3-4 coats down and blocking it so its not a huge deal I suppose but then I plan to seal it with the thinned out white epoxy per Barry when I spoke to him.

My initial sprayout was using a 1.4 base gun that I use as a “primer gun”. The 1.7 is more of a primer gun but both are clean.

I do clean my guns thoroughly and both we’re working fine.

Well if its sputtering and the gun isnt spraying right then your going to need to tear that down and find what is wrong with it. The 1.4 gun would be the better choice for the epoxy. You need to spray a thin but solid coat. It wont cover in 1 coat. The white anyway. You dont want to spray it heavy and lay it out slick like clear coat. Med coats like spraying base

Both guns were torn down and cleaned after I used them. I spayed a light coat as shown in my initial picture above and highlighted here. Its not a heavy coat issue. This is a mist and you can see the droplets. They are big.
I’ll try another gun tomorrow but I am not going to use my Pro Lite clear gun for this…no way. I shouldn’t need to use that type of gun for this should I?

Why not use the Pro Lite? I use my Iwata LPH400 1.4 for SPI epoxy and it lays down nice if you have the fluid about 2.5 turns out and 29 PSI

I find that epoxy is more difficult to clean and personally don’t want to contaminate the guns. One less hassle later. I do use an ultrasonic cleaner after cleaning the guns by hand.
Also the ProLite gun is a high efficiency gun with the TE20 cap. I don't know anyone using a high efficiency gun for primer?

I am wondering if the white part A is actually fully stirred. It's typical for the pigments to drop to the bottom of the can so it needs a LOT of stirring prior to mixing.

The white epoxy in particular can be more difficult to spray than other primers. It also does not cover in the first coat, so the urge can be to over apply, but that's not what the picture looks like. The picture actually looks like a light coat applied at low pressure. If I saw it applying like that, I think I might have increased gun pressure significantly and hit it with a medium coat immediately.
