New to the Forum - Question About Base Coat Products

I have been visiting this forum for awhile now but this is my first post. From what I read here I am sold on SPI products and plan on using them for my repaint. I also think that the posters here answering questions and giving advice are very knowledgeable. So my question is not regarding SPI products but it involves Prospray. I have read here that lots of people use Prospray base and finish with one of the SPI clears such as Universal. I would like to do something like this also but am not familiar with Prospray bases. So I was hoping to get a little more information on Prospray and see how people think it stacks up with PPG or Duponts premium lines and get some opinions for use in my particular situation.

I am repainting a C2 corvette. I am going to strip the paint down to the original fiberglass, would like to use SPI epoxy, primer, and sealer - then apply the base and clear. I want to use the original color and try to match it in whatever base I end up with.

So with PPG and Dupont lines around $600 to $700 a gallon I would like to look at a less expensive option. How does the quality of Prospray base compare with either of these lines? Where I am not concerned with blending or matching but instead repainting the complete car does that change anything? Is there another manufacturer I should be considering?

Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

welcome, chad s would be the guy to answer your question. i have used prospray base and single stage a couple times and it was great but i dont feel i have used it anywhere near enough to give you a good answer. i can tell you i have used econo bases before and prospray was not like any of them. i felt it was just as much a premium line as all the top brands.

Didn't ProSpray originally own another line that got sold to a major company awhile back?

As I understand it, the chemist worked for ICI overseas and ICI started selling devisions off and sold the North American division for ICI Automotive refinish rights to PPG, with the stipulation that after so many years they had to change the name and drop the ICI name = Nexa.

As I understand it the chemist left sometime during or before and started his own company and we all know the pains of new start ups and ended up selling the company to USC, not sure if this is just for North America or not.

Pro-spray is a very good grade base and other new bases have come in that are also a good buy such as Metalux and Wanda, Metalux is from Africa and Wanda from Brazil.

From what I'm seeing marketing wise, metalux is perhaps the fastest growing because of their technical and customer service backing and seem to have better management in place at all levels.

Thank you everyone for the replies so far. Sounds like those of you who have used Prospray have been happy with it. There is an awful lot of work involved in prepping this car, so if there would be a significant difference in quality between this and the premium lines I mentioned in my original post I didn't want to save just a couple of hundred bucks and end up with an inferior job.

Any other responses would be appreciated.
