New Evercoat body filler- Rage Ultra-

P

professor

My local Jobber just got in a new product, Rage Ultra. It is supposed to be "the easiest sanding body filler ever" I tried it out and I have to say, It sands very easy! It sands so easy, almost like drywall mud.... it made me question, how durable is it? Flexing a bit of what was left on the spreader after it cured, it seems to be a lot like the metal glaze spot puddy.

For easy sanding, it is great!

I tried it a few months ago. I wasn't all that impressed over the 3m/Marson Platinum that I've been using for a while now. The platinum is a few bucks cheaper also. Not to say it isn't a good filler. I think it's probably the best filler evercoat has now.

My cost is $48 a gallon for the ultra. $35 for the platinum. The ultra is a little more than gold, but cheaper than the extreme.

I have wanted to try the marson, but have always had excellent results with the rage extreme, but 58.00 a gallon is getting way to far out of the price range of my profit margin

I used to use Rage Extreme, but now use Marson Platinum. NOT the Platinum Plus, I hated that stuff!

I'm afraid to ask how much this new filler is per gallon......

Gallon? LOL, most filler companies have been packaging 3 liters in gallon cans for a few years now. Raise the price and decrease the amount... When original Rage came out I was paying $29 for a full gallon, now Rage Gold (what I usually use) is costing me $45 for 3 liters.

Body solder at $7 a stick doesn't seem so expensive anymore.

I didn't see much difference between the extreme and the platinum besides the price. I agree with sticking with the original platinum as well. It's hard to use anything but that, sands so easy.

For filler I would look got In your area for a local lkq keystone supply shop. Theyre fillers are the best rage rebadged as well as their glazing putties. They are a fraction of the cost. They usually have a special on it to. I paid 15 for my gallon of filler. If you have a relatively flat area you can also use a grinder with a backing pad and 50g sanding disc and shap filler awesome! About two passes with a block and your ready for primer!!

At the current shop I'm at we used to use the Keystone branded body filler we then switched over to Rage Ultra and I don't think they are the same. Rage Ultra sands extremely easy. Easiest of any filler I've used. Rage Gold sands pretty good as well. Keystone stuff not so much. The $15 gallon stuff is not the same as the Ultra or other variations of Rage.

what i end up doing is using one of the cheaper fillers to rough in with. i actually find the 5star red label which i actually think is evercoat featherweight filler relabeled. spreads thick and sands hard if it sits too long but i only rough in with it and sand it with a da. i never hand block the stuff. after that i switch over the the evercoat quantum. very expensive but sands super easy and i dont really need a ton of it since the panel is already pretty close from the 5-star stuff. the quantum is the best filler i have ever used.

I don't think the $15 a gallon stuff you are talking about True65 is the same as rage. We used the Key Gold and Key Premium at the shop I work at until recently when we switched over to the Rage Ultra which sands incredible. Keystone stuff is definitely not the same stuff as either the Rage Ultra or Rage Gold. Probably the Lightweight filler that Jim is talking about is the rebadged $15 gallon stuff you get from Keystone.
I'll have to try some of the Quantum, Jim how does it spread? More like filler or does it spread more like a glaze and level somewhat?

How cold was it when you used it? I've whitnessed then changing the labels literally they take the evercoat label off and put on the house label. I actually went into a keystone they were out on the shelf of their house filler. I asked about having some in back. They said let me check he literally changed the label right in front of me.

the quantum spreads awesome. more like a glaze but its definitely thicker. its supposed to be some type of epoxy poly hybrid. needs special hardener which mixes 10:1 but there are 3 different temps. its pretty much pinhole free. i hate blocking so when it comes time for me to bust out a block then im sanding that stuff. im pretty open to trying this rage ultra though. ill try anything once. i always hated the rage gold. quit using that years ago when they had all the cracking issues with it.

If you are doing some filler where you can get a 4-6" grinding disc. An awesome way to do filler sanding to limit your blocking to next to none. Is to use the grinder polisher with a backing pad and a 4-6" 50g disc on a medium speed. You can stroke the panel with the grain and sand your filler to contour very easy. It also works well when working on a dented fender your trying to get back to contour. You stroke in in a downward motion. It will sand the panel and show you exactly any low or high areas and also blend minor flaws if done correctly. I would strongly suggest that people doing body work to get w buffer grinder. Even one from harborfreight with the digital speed gauge is decent. As long as you follow the grain of the panel it will sand your filler perfect. Many people are skeptical about it. But many that have learned this trick will never go back to only block sanding. I think I might add a video for everyone on this forum to show them how to use a buffer/grinder to do filler work.

Jim I doubt the Rage Ultra is gonna sand as well as the Quantum. It acts pretty much like a conventional body filler, levels out better especially in warmer temps. But compared to the Rage Gold, or other comparable products it really sands easy. I have to be careful when using a glaze over it as the Evercoat Metal Glaze I use sands harder than the Ultra and if I sand through, the Ultra will sand easier than the glaze and will give you a low spot. Very few pinholes, none if you are very careful applying it but nothing like more conventional body fillers.

A cheesegrater will do the same thing. You can also rough it in with a Mudhog (8" orbital sander). Personally I like to get my metal very close so that I don't have to rough something in. Maybe a little cheesegrating and block with 80 grit. As my former boss "Vito" used to say "bada bing bada boom...easy.:)

You can always add some glaze in with the filler as well which im sure your all aware of. They are a polyester resin base so glaze can be intermixed to get that perfect sanding consitency.

I used the Quantum when it first came out, the Rage Gold, Lightweight, Rage Ultra and Rage X-treme. The Quantum is more creamy than the Ultra, but the Ultra is the easiest sanding I ever tried. It's more expensive, but it sands so easy that its all I use. If spread thin, it doesn't make a lot of pinholes, and the Evercoat rep said that glaze wasn't mandatory. BUT, I like having different speed of hardener, depending on the job, it's nice not to rush, which the Ultra doesn't have.

I sanded the Ultra after it hardened a couple of days, and 100 grit is enough to cut it. Eliminated the coarse grits required on older filler, the job gets finished with finer grits.
