Neutralizing Rust before using SPI Epoxy?

Hi everyone, first time poster here. I've been familiar with SPI products for several years, and I helped out at a shop that used several of their primers and clears exclusively.

I'm restoring a '67 Mustang coupe. There are some pitted areas around the rear window, and I've also noticed some areas bubbling on the bottom side of the trunk lid. Right now, I'm stripping the car to bare metal and plan to spray it with SPI epoxy.

I know I could sandblast the area around the rear window, but I can't see any way of getting to the rust on the underside of the trunk lid. What can I use to kill the rust that won't interfere with the epoxy later? I've used SEM Rust-Mort in the past, but wasn't sure how it would react with the epoxy primer. I want to be sure that whatever I use won't come back to bite me later. In the case of the trunk lid, I can use something like a body schutz gun, but once it's sprayed, it's done. I can't get back in there to sand, scuff, etc.

Thanks for any suggestions/info!

I know everyone on here would love to give you a good answer but there is none. Once the rust begins to bubble the paint from the back side of the panel the only permanent solution is to cut out the bad metal and patch. Nothing is going to prevent the rust from spreading and any acid applied to the rear will migrate to the front of the panel and destroy the adhesion of epoxy or anything else for that matter.

Even if you are able to weld up pin holes it is almost sure that there is another thin place just waiting to break through and become another blister. With a little patience and finesse it is possible to remove the trunk skin, make proper repairs and replace the skin allowing the inside areas to be blasted, dipped, or otherwise treated. The minimum, however, is only the defective area being cut out and replaced.

Good luck with the project,
John

Being a coupe you might want to look into getting a non-rusted trunk lid. Try a salvage yard here in Arizona or another place in the Southwest.

you can replace anything on a mustang. fixing a beat up or rusty part is money thrown away .

Thanks everybody, I was kind of afraid of that. I'll look into finding another decklid.
