Hi Guys, I need your help again. I just bought a 65 mustang and really love this color red mustang from Barrett-Jackson. However, we will never really know the exact color because it only says red. Does anyone know a way to find how what this paint color is and the paint code. Thanks

Lol just track down the guy who painted it and ask him. :D Or I can dig up my magic eight ball I had as a kid and ask it. Seriously though unless you could find the owner or painter knowing what color or paint code is impossible.
Good news is SPI Red and SPI Medium Red are both very close to that shade of red.

Thanks a lot chris, I know its really difficult but at least you help me to get in the ball park to kinda start narrowing it down.

Maybe the best thing to do is to find a red vehicle in real life that you like the color of, in that case it would be a lot easier to obtain the paint code. On modern vehicles, it can be obtained by the VIN. Also you could ask SPI for color samples when you buy material.

Thanks Crashtech,I you got a good point because its hard to eyeball it. Yeah , that's probably going to be me best bet......

If I had to guess I would say it's probably Viper Red due to the popularity of that color. Even if it isn't it's in that range. SPI Red is very close to Viper Red. SPI Medium Red is slightly darker but still very bright.

I seem to remember Viper Red being the target for the original SPI Red. That's been a long time ago now.

I was thinking that it might be viper red but wasnt sure. Maybe I can get a quart of viper red to test it to see it’s close to what I’m looking for. If you all have any suggestions feel free to let me know good looking red colors that not a bright red.

If you are going to do that, call the office at SPI and ask for a set of their red paint chips.

Here is a picture of my '53 sitting beside a '55 that is painted Viper Red. As you can see, the SPI dark red on my '53 is the same color, other than being a couple of shades darker.

If we are right and the car is Viper red, the SPI red or medium red will be basically the same color and a better grade of paint for less money.

Thanks John, you got a good looking car there and thanks for the photo. Also thanks for the insight on choosing SPI over the PPG quality for less. I will call SPI and get some red color samples. This was a big help showing the SPI colors.
