Mopar Nut
Anyone ever use this and have issues with fisheyes? I’m being punished for trying to help out a friend. Just trying to fix a couple bad spots and I keep getting fisheyes. I just cleaned/serviced my oil separators and have a dryer (and it is 4% humidity at 80F). Happened once but I thought it was solvent pop as this stuff is thin and I layed it on too heavy and got runs. I sanded it out today and shot it again this time not so much and almost immediately this happened. The data sheet specs out a fisheye reducer so is this stuff prone to this? I hate deviating from SPI and Motobase products….

if fisheye eliminator was added to the original paint job then it could be from that. fisheye eliminator is silicone so if silicone is in the previous paint then you will need to add it again to your new paint. fisheye eliminator is sort of a thing of the past. you dont hear about it being used to much these days but if the tds calls for it then it could have been added previously.....assuming its the same paint. if the fisheyes keep coming back and they are in the same area it can also be solvent pop in the previous paint causing them. old paint is sanded leaving micro pinholes then the new paint flows away from the holes and looks like contamination. i have to deal with that issue on a daily basis with gelcoat that have solvent pop...in that world its called porosity. both of these issues are not the first place i would look. this is all assuming you have gone over the more common issues

It was painted at Maaco less than 5 years ago, would not have any info if they used the fish eye eliminator. What you your first line of attack be?

i really dont have much experience with eliminator. its the devil. once you start using it you cant stop because everything is contaminated with silicone. i would avoid it if i could

Dawn and water then a tack rag. Wet sanding with water and rubber gloves. There should be not much to clean off I don't think.
It would be a good idea.....mandatory IMO that after it's dry and masked off that you then wipe down with either a waterborne or solvent based W&G remover. If you are not doing that and anything touches the surface after you washed with Dawn then you could get contamination, even with gloves. Depending on what you are using to wipe down with, you could get contamination.
A tacky tack cloth can also cause issues like we are seeing. Final tack use a low tack cloth like Surgical Blue or equivalent.

I was thinking the tack cloth as well as it has a waxy feel to it. I just sanded it down and gave it about 4 wipe downs with 710... Now let it dry and not use a tack cloth.

I used to spray alot of Nason full thane 2.8 when the fleet was mostly white. Once it went low voc it got harder to spray and picky on which reducer. Never had fish eye problems.

If there was solvent pop in the previous paint job, it can look like fish eyes when the paint cannot fill the hole.

Have a few ford explorer's in metallic black with factory solvent pop, looks like extra metallic until you sand it. Can fill most with clear when I fix one. They look like fish eyes or craters after.

maco is notorious for using FE . they dont clean worth a shit so it's insurance.

So I sanded the living crap out of it and made sure I had ALL the pits gone. Cleaned it 4 times with 710, 1.5 hours drying time, no tack rag just blew it off (I am going to cut and buff it anyway) and did not lay the first coat on as heavy. First coat seam to have gone on clean... now I say that I it will be crap when I go back out for the second coat...
