My Jeep Wrangler Truck Project

D

Dwg86

So I’m taking a 1997 Jeep Wrangler and turning it into a pickup truck. I’ve built the bed out of 1x1 square tube with 16 gauge sheet metal. I’ve used Jeep CJ rear corners, then bent sheet metal to match the corners. I used trailer fenders for the fender wells, and a new El Camino floor for the floor of the bed.

The Jeep has been cut in half. I used a Jeep trailer panel that was molded off a Jeep for the rear panel of the cab.

Removing the turn signal lights from the fenders and putting them in the grill where they belong. I used 2007 Jeep JK lights in the grill. I had to make “buckets” for the lights to snap into.

This is where I’m at now. I’ve been using PPG OMNI epoxy primer and high build 2k, but have now switched to SPI epoxy and 2k high build. I’m loving the SPI epoxy. I have yet to shoot the 2k high build, but if it’s anything like the epoxy I’m sure I’ll love it also.

Thanks, I’ve been working on it for a few years now. I’m hoping to have it in paint this year... if the weather ever warms up. SHEEZ!

It’s getting a Dodge 360 for the power plant. I have to pass emissions and the Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Ram use the same computer. I built the wiring harness and did a quick test run before I took the Jeep apart. It ran and all the gauges worked.

I tried to download a video of the engine running, but the website won’t let me..

Well thought out, nice work, and solid frame, looks awesome! You'll be glad you came here, keep the pictures coming.

I’m sure I’ll have a lot of questions on paint. It’s been probably 15 years since I’ve painted a car. Here’s my fiberglass CJ5 I painted about 15 years ago. I didn’t realize how expensive paint has gotten, well at least PPG paint. One of the colors I’m looking at painting my Jeep truck is Ford Magnetic Grey. 1 gallon of PPG base is almost $700.00 just for the paint. No hardener or reducer.

Anything new on this project?
A lot of nice work done so far, it’s gonna be a cool ride!
My Son and I always talked about doing a 4 door pickup with an XJ and a Commanche bed, but never got to it.

I’m working on it when I can. 12 hour shifts is not helping my efforts. I’ve got all the parts except the tailgate in high build primer. I’ll be spraying high build on the tailgate this week. I finally got the hood straightened out.

I started wet sanding the hood. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. It was a junkyard hood that had a crease in it I didn’t see till after I brought it home. Some hammer and dolly work, polyester primer and a few coats of high build SPI, and I’m going to call it good. I did have a spot where I sanded through to the base SPI epoxy. Should I hit that area with some more high build, or will the sealer coat cover it up?

I finally found a color I like, but I like how it looks in this picture. It’s cyber gray. It must be cloudy or there is some sort of filter on the camera. When I see it in other pictures it looks lighter. I need to look at it in person. Maybe I can find someone to do a custom mix. Anyone have any suggestions?
