MGB Repaint

Thx Dean/Chris. Makes sense. So if really no rust in there (I will verify), then I can avoid adhesion issues entirely not even recoating. If rust, then media blast and epoxy prime. Make sense?

Dropped off this project in April due to a family wedding which is in early October. Will be working on first panel soon after that. Single stage British Racing Green. Will work one panel from bare metal to color and post progress

Finally have the shop set up and time to work on this MGB. As this is my first painting project I’ve decided to take one panel (trunk lid ) right through single stage color.
First step of removing paint went quickly with heat gun stripping followed by DA cleanup. Found minor surface rust and grinder scratches under an old repair. Metal under the factory paint and repaint looks good.

Looks like great progress. Congrats!

Maybe you know already, apologies if you do.
When you get a section finished and want to protect it, do not wrap it in any kind of plastic. Cotton sheets only.

Everyone wants to get the "cloud shot" of their glass like paint reflecting the sky.
Not the cloud shot of their formally glossy paint that plastic wrap messed up.

Paint removal on trunk lid complete. The underside with the frame required a combination of heat gun, da 80g, 4 inch blue stripper and 2 inch cookie disk.
Banged out a few minor dents from a previous repair as well as I could as a beginner to minimize filler.then da sanded 80g both sides.
Mixed black epoxy primer this morning. Washing/wax degreasing this afternoon. Will do 2 wet coats this evening.
Tomorrow will try light blocking 120g to see where I am and use filler Rage Ultra where needed. Hoping to have single stage color on well before 7 day window.
This is a first time log, so nothing here for experienced guys but maybe useful for other first timers.

I have the trunk lid (outside) epoxy primed and at 600 grit wet sand stage, and ready for reduced epoxy primer sealer and single stage color. The inside is bare metal, degreased with 80 grit scratches. What do you all recommend? Thinking of one coat of unreduced epoxy on inside, scuff to 180 and seal both sides and shoot color both sides. Or do I need to do finer sanding on inside. Really only looking for color match and good adhesion..
Would appreciate any guidance

Almost done with soup to nuts process with trunk lid. Sprayed epoxy primer reduced 25% (First time doing that and with gun I haven’t used) and it went really well except for one small run. Was planning on spraying ss color this evening but that’s not possible now. Thinking of sanding only the run with 600 in morning if I can, tack rag and spray single stage.
Any thoughts?

The run might take longer to dry since it's thicker than the rest of the primer. Stick it outside in the sun for a day. No use in rushing stuff if you don't have to.

Thanks AAE. Makes sense. At that point I will be out of the time window to put down base. Can I lay down another reduced cost?

I would try to lightly sand it before putting it in the sun. I have sanded 25% reduced base next day. Just need to go easy on it and change paper if it loads up.

Thanks Don: It did sand out nicely with 400grit just now. Now I am wondering if I tack and move on to single stage (dark green) or hit it with more reduced primer? Can't be sure, but I don't think I sanded through the sealer coat.

Learning panel in paint. No runs or dirt that I can see . Some orange peal because I didn’t check the gun pressure mid way and it was a little low. Now things can move along.

Learning panel after sanding but before compound/polish/glaze. Wet sanded 1500. Damp sanded trizact 1500/2000/3000/8000.
I think this is better for a beginner because I sand better than I buff.

After light compound and polish. I wanted to go through every step on one panel and glad I did as I made many mistakes I hopefully won’t repeat. Time to pick up the pace.

I have the next panels in epoxy and ready for sealer (he thought) I have a few quarter-sized filler and bare metal spots exposed after 400 wet sand.
Not sure if I can recoat with unreduced epoxy after 400 wet. Options I am thinking of are:
-Recoat unreduced epoxy, wet sand and go to reduced epoxy sealer 25%
-spot in unreduced epoxy and wet sand those area then go to reduced epoxy sealer 25%
-go right to reduced epoxy sealer 25%
Dark green non-metallic single stage
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Halfway through the MGB project and really getting somewhere. Finally have gun settings and speed -distance dialed in. Here is a door panel after paint.
