Metalux 2 basecoat

Has anyone used this?

Used some yesterday and wasn't all that impressed...but it was a bright yellow, and judging by the label on the can, 90% of tint was their pure yellow. Not too surprised that it was very transparent...but seemed more-so than others.

Been approached by the guy selling it a few times and used it a few years ago and wasnt all that impressed then either.

Maybe just my badluck? very possible.

I use it regularly, I like it.
They have color chips for the alternates and I get better
matches with it, the chips are dead on for me.
I used to use DuPont's Chromabase, but the Metalux is half the cost
and better matches so that's what I use now along with Gen Star.
My supplier carries Metalux and Gen Star, I usually pick the one that has the
closest color match, but they both do really good for me.

maybe it's just the supplier in my area then..LOL. The yellow i'm talking about above is a newer mustang color, D6 screaming yellow. car belongs to a friend of mine and after a wreck he fixed the front clip and painted the car..had a few bad spots in it due to the paint booth he used and asked me to respray the fender and hood for him in my booth. he said the first time they mixed the color, it was 4-5 shades too light...they pretty much had to tint it to get even remotely close to the right color. and is still a few shades off.

Every system out there has their bad apple colors...reason i was asking. There's a particular red metallic gm color in sikkens that is like spraying candy. Might to have to give it a try on something else. I've never used it as far as doing a repair and color matching.

thanks jc

I have never used it myself but the feed back from shops that have it, really like it.
One shop very high production shop near you in Akin, SC has had a mixing machine about three years now, he had always used Standox and SPI and he does new insurance type work only.

After six months the Standox machine was gone and like he said, he had ran into 3-5 colors where there was a problem but he stated Standox was no different.

So far all I have heard has been good, adhesion like Diamont because of the heavy polyester is a notable concern but proper speed reducer and activating the base takes care of that issue.

Well, there are definetly better bases out there.
And some colors really cover differently even within the same brand.
I don't think Metalux or DuPont is a great hiding base as far as that is concerned,
but I get good results with Metalux and if it takes a couple extra coats,
so what. The color match is more important to me, I'd even pay more
for that but at the price, Metalux is a pretty good deal.
The other brand I use, the Gen Star actually covers better.
I've used Pro Base, and PPG base and they definetly cover better.
If I did overalls I'd consider those, but for my work, small collision repair
where I do 1 to 2 panels per car, I get 1/2 pint or 1 pint of paint usually and
I always have some left over. So a couple extra coats doesn't matter to me.
I did the Vette in my Avatar with the Gen Star and used less than 3 quarts
for a color change on the entire vehicle. The Gen Star was under $75 a quart.
That's a deal for orange base.

My supplier just switched his formula for Metalux, it now takes 2 parts paint
to 1 part reducer, it used to be 1 to 1. Basically you get less paint.
That makes me pick the Gen Star now when I can.
Nothing ever stays the same:mad:
