I have never tried the SPI stuff and while I am in the process of painting an old Dodge truck cab I thought it would be perfect to give the production clear a shot. This isn't nothing show worthy, I normally would use all omni BC/CC but omni 161 is over $200 for a gallon kit now up here. I spoke with Andy, who was a great person to deal with, he knew everything and had great thorough technical answers making it a pleasant transaction. I plan to use the universal clear on my 70 f100 that I'm restoring and a couple other vehicles in the line up in the future. I plan to update with my experience with the production clear for those interested.

Again, thanks to SPI staff member Andy. I can never get straight answers when going to my local ppg platinum dealers as they all seem to just read the pamphlet instead of actually using and knowing the product they sell.

I shot the production clear on today. It was about 78* in the Booth. The first coat laid down pretty nice but was drying real fast. Second time around and turned the fluid needle out 1.5 turns and dropped pressure from 19psi to 16psi. It laid out a lot flatter and wet, but it ran in spots where I didn't move fast enough. Overall for it being production clear, it turned out OK. It took a little to get used because on jobs like this I'm used to omni 161. But for as cheap as this clear is and it being called "production", it is exactly what it, is. It is great for production work and at half the price of what I normally pay for production clear I am ecstatic.

Hopefully I can try out the the universal clear. Also I sprayed the clear with a devilbiss tekna prolite with a 1.4 tip. I will post pics as soon as I figure out how to. Any advice as to my gun settings I'm all ears. I know it was probably out of whack.

U run my tekna copper @ 30psi with the trigger pulled.. 16psi seems abit low for that gun. Also i run mine 2.5 turns out from closed.

Looks pretty good to me, the one drawback to all the SPI clears is, if first coat sprayed dry or with peel, it is almost impossible to flow out with a second or third coat, they are made that way for good reason but most other clears you can recover.

Because of this what the dealerships do if painting a door to match the rest co the car they will spray a medium coat, let dry 15 minutes and then a wet coat and it will match the factory orange peel of rest of car or truck.
