lets talk buffers

Well I must have rushed the sanding. I had pigtails and the foam pad... I don't know, I'll try some more today. I was going to pull the valve body out of a mustang trans today but work is work right? might as well get these panels shined up.

how do you get pigtails with a foam pad and rotary sander ???????

i keep my pads damp and avoid heat like the plaque. rinse after every 3rd application of compound .

From the sander. I'm dry film sanding my clear.

I'm sending you a PM (hope that's ok)

yes if the panel didnt buff out instantly then your changing grits too fast. your not working the previous scratches out before moving on. its easy with primers and fillers because the scratches are big and you can see them. when you get into 1000 grit and higher it can be tough or impossible to tell if you got everything. you have to just know from experience i guess. it happens to the best of us. i use wool on bigger flat panels because it really is faster. foam on everything else.

I've been using my Flex 3401 with a hybrid wool foam pad from Lake Country. It will remove 1500g scratches in a couple passes.

the yellow pad is the heavy cutting pad. the orange is the medium cutting pad. chemical guys does sell a light cutting wool pad. you can also still get the yellow finishing bonnet . we used them after wool on lacquer to get it really clear.

My 1st true cut & buff 15yrs ago was factory clear on my 1993 Caddy.
2000g only, compound was auto parts store 3m course/heavy cut followed by fine then chroma2000.
I used a blue solid, not hex or waffle design pad attached to 3/8 drill for everything. Was 2" thick.
Best finish i ever did. Wax actually dulled shine a tad. Rub with finger you'd scratch it.

Past few yrs i've beed using hex orange to cut, didnt like yellow, white or black for polish. That's just me & kinda liked smooth pads better.
Who makes good 3-6" velcro smooth ones?

And my small 1 panel at a time pe-8 gets cranked up to 3 max for my 1 handed operation.

the hexlogic waffle pads help wick off heat. when foam first got started they were solid and smooth. had to be careful or they would burn up your paint. i use the hex pads now. the yellow is like a woolpad. it is a heavy cut .

The orange hex was working fairly well for me yesterday with V series .... 36 I believe? "cutting polish"

But I ran a blended wool 3-m pad for the initial shine up.

I may be doomed with my wool for ever, I will try a yellow hex tho.

Maybe that is why I am still using wool. I tried the kit from Chemical Guys. It came with orange, white, and black hex-logic pads. It takes a lot longer than wool and 3m compounds. Maybe I would like the Chemical Guys more if I tried a yellow pad?

32 for cutting. 36-38 for polishing .

What I meant is, I compounded with wool and followed with a polish effort by I used orange pad with the 36 polish.

Even with the wool I felt that the v series 32 was slow. I did a few test areas, v32 vs turbo cut vs 3M-1.

I felt that the 3m worked faster, better for me. As far as polishing, I don't know. Can't begin to make a call on that yet but I will continue to play with the V series samples.

You may want to try these purple foamed wool from Lake Country. They cut like a wool pad without the excessive holograms. I use the force foamed wool on my flex DA buffer. It removes 1500g pretty easily.

I'm using hexalogics and V series right now on black univerasal clear. The v series takes more work for me but it's looking good.
Heres my buff procedure once everything is up to 5000 grit with a 3m trizact.
Yellow=32
Orange=34
White=36
Black= 3m perfect it 3m machine polish (I like it better than 38 and seems to be sharper)

I've bounced back and forth between the 3m #1 with yellow pad and #2 with a black pad and the Vseries. For the most part I can do the 3m two step and be right there without the 4 steps of the vseries. I keep giving the vseries a shot and It's getting dialed in except for more work. The vseries don't seem to dye back like the 3m does. Probably the 4 passes keep polishing and the 3m must be filling and slightly dying back once the fillers dissolve.

I have 4 years and several big jobs on my 3403 and it's never missed a beat. After this car I might re-grease it and see if it runs cooler.

3m will always seem the fastest but its all imaginary lol. give you that real perfect finish that last until it sits for a few days or you wipe the panel down with 700 or alcohol. at that point you have to go back an compound again. drives me nuts. the black perfect it polish works nice though. I do like that. so far that sonax and menzerna compound has been great. cant go wrong with either one.

I have been dry nylon brush spurring my foam pads when they start to get loaded.

Do you run with any moisture in the foam? Maybe conditioner spray? (I have not tried that)

after every third time i apply compound i rinse out the pad . just me but i like a clean damp pad. i also use the conditioner .
i never let the pad get loaded with dead clear .
