lets talk buffers

3m will always seem the fastest but its all imaginary lol. give you that real perfect finish that last until it sits for a few days or you wipe the panel down with 700 or alcohol. at that point you have to go back an compound again. drives me nuts. the black perfect it polish works nice though. I do like that. so far that sonax and menzerna compound has been great. cant go wrong with either one.

Which menzerna ?

Sonax cutmax?

I use the conditioner and keep it lubricated but I don't rinse the pads during a buff session. I wash them with chemical guys cleaner and let dry overnight probably four times per car. Never liked getting pads wet because they don't stay on very good.

the menzerna 300 and the cutmax from sonax. i have been through a qt of each and i havent decided which one i like better. they are so close. neither one has the scratch fillers in them like 3m does.

Thanks, You running wool with those? Have you tried any of the "foamed" or "electrified" (basically "safe wools")? Maybe blended wool or straight up old fashioned 100% wool?

I have some blended wool pads and some 100% wool, I'm thinking about trying the lake country foamed wool 7.5" for my rotary.

Jim do these compounds clean up better than 3M? Some of the 3M stuff is darn near impossible to remove (spatter) if it stays on the panel any time.

i think they clean up real easy chris BUT i always clean up completely when im done buffing. i dont let spatter sit for days or anything. they are both a very clean compound to begin with so provided you set the buffer on the compound and not run it into it while the pad is spinning then there isnt really much spatter if any.

i use both wood and foam with them. works great with both. never used the hybrid pads. foam i use the hexlogic pads. yellow or orange for compound and black for polish

the microfiber pads are really nice. work much better than i thought.

polishing and finishing I suppose?

I'm glad this thread has revived, it's good to stay on top of this stuff and I appreciate you guys sharing your experience.

Jim, I seem to remember you saying you run an interface pad on everything with all of your finish sanding? I tend to do my safer flat areas with no foam interface when I'm leveling. I do feel better about leveling with the foam pad though, I'm trying to decide if I'm really gaining anything by leveling without the foam pad out on my big flats and gently crowned surfaces. The supertack film is relatively stiff in itself, maybe it levels well enough with the foam interface.

Urethane wave? How much is acceptable or to be expected?

generally you arent going to remove much urethane wave out with 1000-1500. doesnt matter if you have it on a soft pad or not. the real key to urethane wave is to clear, block with 400, clear again with slightly reduced and no more than 3 coats spraying a couple more inches away from the panel than usual. at that point you can start your sanding. if you just clear once and need it ultra flat then hard blocking the clear may be in order. urethane wavy comes from the spraying process so if you can avoid adding excessive wave through your spray technique then a da with a soft pad works just fine. now if your going for the riddler then hard blocking the clear is the only way to get that level of flatness no matter what.

I don't have considerable wave issues, I would say flatter or as flat as most of the better paint jobs I see on the nicer cars at local area shows. I may have to try blocking and reshooting the clear sometime, perhaps on a smaller project, lol. Sounds like something to try on motorcycle parts, but they don't have enough surface area to really benefit from it I suppose.

Well, I ordered a bottle of sonax cutmax and some new 7.5" lake country pads along with a new 6" backing plate.

We'll see how that all goes.

Thank you Jim.

I am really enjoying the combination of my new purple "foamed wool" pad from lake country with the sonax compound.

Excellent.

I have a few lake country foam pads as well for polishing, haven't tried them yet. The foamed wool and sonax are very good together.
