Iwata lph80 vs Sata Minijet 4400b HVLP

First off, my main use will be to paint and clear helmets in a variety of colors to include tricoat candies . I also use mainly satin and matte clear coats but occasionally run a glossy show clear. the paints and clears I use all come from http://specialistpaints.com so I believe them all to be urethane.

I was recommended both the Iwata lph80 and the sata minijet 4400b. I’ve since purchased the Iwata lph80 and find it to be a fantastic gun. It runs at only 14 psi and atomizes wonderfully. With the 1.2 tip I’m able to produce a 5.5 inch fan so coverage is good for my intended purpose(helmet painting).

Now I want to have separate guns for paint and clear. My question is, should I get another Iwata or should I opt to also get the sata minijet HVLP with the 1.0 nozzle? I’m wondering if the sata is as easy to control on a small object like a helmet or if its going to shoot out product like a fire hose.

Has anyone handled both guns? If so please share your opinion.

thank you in advance

i have both. i like the minijets better than my 80. i have had a minijet 3000, 4 and a 4400. the 80 is a great gun but i find it really cramped. its almost too small and i dont have big hands either. something about the minijets just feels better. they feel and look less delicate. there is one seal on my 80 that just wont ever hold up. it pisses air all the time. i have to replace it constantly and i think at this point i am done. its just going to have to leak. idk, the 80 just feels more old school of a gun. not up to todays standards for a new gun which is of course expected i think because that gun has been out for what, 15 years? its just overdue for a refresh. now my 4400 has a 1.4 tip in it. i wanted it to spray a little more like a larger gun while my 80 has a 1.0 so it is really hard to compare the 2 guns for spraying. the minijet has a much better fan. to get a fan close to the 4400 you need the 104 aircap for the 80. for helmets and small parts you cant go wrong with the 4400. i would get it with a 1.2 though not the 1.4.

Well initially I ordered my lph80 with an E4 air cap and a 1.0 nozzle. It handled clearcoat like a champ but I felt the fan was lacking (around 3 inches or so) when laying down paint. So I purchased a 1.2 tip and the fan now is around 5.5 inches and works well when painting helmets.

I have a friend that has the minijet 4400 HVLP with the 1.0 tip and swears by it. So I put in an order for one this weekend but kinda wonder if it’s too much gun for painting helmets. But since it is a touch up gun, I’m hoping it’s still a nice fit for what I want it for... but I’d be lying though if I said part of me doesn’t feel like just canceling the order and buying another lph80... but if I did that I’d never know if the minijet was better or not.. so I’m still open to opinions. Lol

def not too much gun. it will be great for primer, basing them out and clear. might be a little big if you trying to do detailed graphics or something like that with it.
I’m not doing any graphics. Just straight paint and clear... I was previously using a DeVilbiss GTi Pro Lite with a 1.3 tip and the HV25 air cap. It’s a great gun but I feel like it was too much gun for helmet painting. I was shooting it at 2 bar (around 30 psi) and it puts down a good coat of paint but it moves so much air it produces a lot of overspray and is very paint hungry.

Another popular mini is the ANI 150. Pretty inexpensive and gets good reviews. I have a SATA 4400b and have never liked it. I got out a really old Devilbiss SRI and wished I could find the new PPS adapter for it.

I actually have both an ani r150 and f160. Those are the two guns I started with. Both good cheap guns that I bought off the recommendation of the gunman and used for the past year or so. I then took another one of the gunman recommendations, which was the DeVilbiss GTi Pro Lite. Which I do think is better than the ani ones. I used it for a few weeks and then purchased the lph80(another gunman recommendation). I really like this gun and suits my needs for the most part. I’m still having issues dialing it in though for clear but it lays down paint amazing well. So now I’m going to also try the minijet. See how well it does(also a gunman recommendation lol).
