Isnt Matrix Just PPG ?

I read that most here dont like Matrix. But isnt it just PPG relabeled? Ive never used It but I have used PPg. Wasnt crazy for there clear, but otherwise good stuff. If Im using SPI products under and over matrix and use SPI reducer in their base would it be ok? My SPI salesman only sells SPI and Matrix. There is another place a little father away that sells Utech, Wanda, and Lesnal. Would I be better off with one of those instead? I cant afford Sikkens.

matrix sucks. it is brittle as hell and chips easy. if someone tells you it is just relabeled ppg stop listening to them.

So you must be painting something that you don't care too much about?

Not relabeled PPG. Matrix mixes and labels their own products based on PPG formulations. So, that means anyone that says Matrix is no good says the same for PPG. I have no hate or problems with either from my hands on eperience over the yrs. P.S. I have 5 different clears on my shelf and when applied right they all do what they are supposed to.

i have used ppg for close to 40 years. i also used a complete matrix system. no comparison. if it were a rip off of their formulas they would sue them to the stone age. i've never had ppg as brittle as matrix.

the chemists who started matrix from what i am told all left ppg to start their own gig so is it duplicated ppg, no. since the same chemists are involved in it, it probably does have alot of similarities chemically. i have intermixed matrix with spi many times. they work great together. i do agree with shine that most of the matrix clears are hard and brittle. do i think it sux, no. i used their top of line clear and thought it was pretty good. if your gonna buff it you gotta get on it quick. the high end clear i used was less brittle than the mid grade stuff i tried.

good to see you back jim ! i was talked into the matrix system by a relative in sales. used the entire system down to the euroclear. both cars chipped badly and had to be rebuffed several times. i used the epoxy on a 57 convert that i blasted. now a year or so latter there is surface rust coming through all over the car which now that i think about it makes it just like ppg dplf. i know the #'s are pretty much the same but the quality of the resins are light years apart imo . the chipping is what turned me off along with the die back .

Hi shine :) i will say it has been years since i have used it and i only used a few of the top products and their speed clear. That died badly and was brittle as hell. The Clear that i normally used and i didnt think was bad was the ms-42. Again we are talking 10 years ago. No idea what their stuff is like these days. Some companies improve products and others go right down the drain

i though it was ok until i started building. shot well, the euroclear laid down nice. but damn , if i even bumped it there would be a chip fall out. then it died back bad. the 62 vette i had to buff 3 times.on the third go round guess who shows up. the matrix rep. by the time i was through with him i dont think he even came down the hwy again.

hope your going strong . i am finishing my last frame off for the public . the surgeon said i could go back to work next week. then it's my projects time. i have 3 that have sat for 30 years. now it's my turn :)

Yeah its nice to be able to work on your own projects. I am doing pretty good. Stayin busy. This time of year is always a little slower for me because everyone is using their toys. I get to relax a little atleast.

ok..to the original OP. If you can't afford the sikkens, try the wanda or the utech. I've been using wanda for the past year and a half and I'm happy with the system using SPI Clears. Used sikkens before I switched. It is priced at half the cost of sikkens and has an excellent color match considering it uses the same variant color system as sikkens autobase plus. The utech 3.8 SS is very good, and perfect choice if you are wanting to use Single Stage. The wanda has a SS line, but I still like the utech.

I honestly wouldn't fool with lesonal. Wanda beats the price to performance ratio.

Don't fool with the matrix considering you have these much better alternatives there....

Thanks JeremyB. Ive used the uteck ss, but it was 10+ years ago. I realy liked it back then, but it was just what a friend bought for me to paint his truck as a side job. How does the Uteck polybase compare to the Wanda base? I assume the prises are close?

They are in the same price range. Poly base / polybase plus is good also. I haven't used as much of it as the wanda. They are listed as "budget" but really, these 2 lines are anything but. They will both out perform some of the other majors top lines. DBC for example...
