New guy here so be kind for dumb questions. I,m wanting to shoot a helmet with Chameleon powder in my base coat clear.
Why do you need a intercoat clear for your base coat instead of just using finish clear during the base coat process?

Good question, you can do either way.
JimC has done both ways. He can give better answers than me.
I have done it both ways once, and I think intercoat clear gives a better look
And more childproof for my lack of skill.

the main thing that just seems to get over looked is just thinking about intercoat clear as basecoat clear like you are saying. I also refer to it as flake carrier.
I am not professional enough to answer, but to me the most important part of using intercoat, or basecoat clear is that it dries within 20 minutes and within a half hour or hour you can tape for other effects. You do the entire coat with your topcoat clear, its spray it, turn off the fan and walk away til the next day. You dont like the effect with the intercoat, you mix more flake and add another coat, right then until you are happy. Its also good to add depth to work between shading when you are concerned about taping on top of your happy place..
I have added flake, candy to intercoat, basecoat, topcoat clear. I have also added candies to the first coat of the final clear, never all the way to the end, so its all uv protection on top.

Just to be clear are you asking why use intercoat over your already sprayed base? Or are you asking why use intercoat to mix the powder instead of using regular clear to mix the powder?
If it's the first, 90% of the time there is no need to. If you have a complex taping job, or can't clear for quite a long time (weeks) after you shoot the base then intercoat is a good idea. Most of the time though it's not required.
If it's the second, intercoat or clear base binder is preferred for many reasons. Easier to spray. Better flake control. Dries faster. Far less film build. Same reasons that bc/cc paint systems are prevalent.
