Is it necessary or recommended to sand orange peel from SS before spraying clear over it? Sprayed the hood of my corvette and it came out decent but far from perfect. I would describe it as having slight orange peel and some trash. I'll do whatever the pros advise. My spraying is getting a little better but still not able to spray consistent passes so I know I have to sand but don't know if the clear "hides or buries" these imperfections so I can just sand the clear saving myself a step but ill do whatever you guys say is correct. Obviously I'm a beginner but striving to do a decent job. thanks for any help

Some SS can change color a little when sanded, so if I'm going to do a job like that, I will prepare a test panel with the SS, let it dry, then put a tape line down the middle and sand half of it right up to the tape. Peel the tape, wipe and clear it, and look at it in the sun. If both sides look alike, you can clear the sanded SS. If they don't look the same, you have to lay a coat of SS down, then clear without sanding.

BTW, if you have waited beyond a certain amount of time, sanding is not optional.

Thanks Crash. I read your posts. My question is I painted SPI SS black today I will be spraying the whole car but in pieces hood, doors bumper etc.., then eventually the body. I do not spray single stage like glass I'm not that good yet. So If i have orange peel and a few nibs and trash in the SS do I wet sand the SS then clear it or does the clear hide the peel in the SS and I just sand all my mistakes out in the clear. Trying to learn. I appreciate your help.

Why do you want to clear it?
Well originally I was going with straight single stage but I had 2 sets of t tops for my vette and started with those to get a feel this being
my first spray job. Did one set single stage cut and buffed and the 2nd set SS and cleared and cut and buffed just to compare and for some reason I got better results with the clear. I couldn't get the black SS to get that wet look after cutting and buffing it actually looked duller after I polished. So being an amateur I went with what seemed to work for me and my skill level. It might be strange but I spray universal clear better then SS even though I've read they spray similarly. I seem to do a little better with the clear and thats how I got down this road and its been a long road. I've since realized my buffing and sanding skills had a lot of room for improvement and that might explain the different results, but since Ive already cleared some parts I felt committed to continue down this long and winding road. :)

There you go.

Clear doesn't hide defects like orange peel and runs at all, sometimes it can actually seem like it magnifies them, in a way. Depending on what you are using, SS and clear should spray very similarly.
Ok ill wet sand the SS and then spray the clear. Thanks for the help Crash

I believe the reason the SS sprayed different for you is because SS is based on SPI Production clear and that is different from the Unversal clear.
I have sprayed both the Production clear and the Universal clear.and they are different. Someone please correct me if that is wrong.

Thats interesting. Another weird observation Ive made is my first coat whether SS or Universal is my best coat and my 2nd coat and subsequent coats are never as smooth as my first. Still not able to be consistent in my spraying. Trying to learn all I can so I have a fighting chance of achieving a decent looking job when done. Thanks for the response.

If not you should be.
Yes. I am using the slow activator in both SS and clear and I just began adding in a little retarder. I believe my problem is my speed and distance. Hard to keep a consistent speed and distance when having to walk when spraying long panels such as my hood. Appreciate all the advice
