I want to create the "Best Sanding Blocks Ever"

I use rolls. I also have a 36” AFS that comes in real handy for getting doors and long quarters blocked out. I’d suggest maybe a longer than 24” would have a market.

Mostly rolls on dura-blocks. For blocks I made, I wasn't smart enough to cut them in standard length.

Kinda why we make Them.
Can't begin to count how many 'speciality' blocks I've made or what out of. Part of It.
I always have used rolls. The only cut paper was for the air file which is 'someplace'?

Wow, great thread going here! I started making my own acrylic blocks probably 25 years back. I had many different sizes made; I also have many blocks made of oak and hickory. I recently purchased a 24-inch rigid linear block....very expensive but works great!
My 2 cents on acrylic..pro's and cons. number one pain is the sticket roll paper always leaves some of the backing glue on the stick and you have to try to get it off every time you change the paper. Acrylic blocks are not easy to hold on to nor comfortable to use, even the big Linear block is not comfortable to use with their handle design. The pro's, acrylic is very lightweight and when blocking with acrylic there is no cheating... it's flat and straight! I look forward to seeing what you come up with and would like to try them!

Got an email yesterday from a group of barefoot foreigns who are looking forward to making your blocks, like right now :)

I got an email yesterday from a nice guy in Nigeria who is ready to wire me a large sum of money, just needs my banking information and it is a done deal

Meanwhile, the tools/dies were completed and first samples run. They were close, but not good enough. The factory is working on dialing in the process and formulation to get it right.

Trust me, no one wants to get this going more than me. But I won't compromise on quality and I won't open the door for the "pre-sales," until I am 100% confident that I can deliver "the best sanding blocks, ever."

Hopefully very soon.

Meanwhile, I will go outside and yell at and kick a 200 foot Douglas Fir tree, as I wait patiently. The tree won't mind and I'll feel better.

Try Sunmight paper, it doesn't leave residue behind on poly or acrylic blocks. Lasts a long time too.

Interesting. In the name of research I ordered 3M Stikit Blue, Mirka and Sunmight PSA rolls.
I'm trying all of them now. So far none of them leave a residue.
Dura Gold left a mess, as did the no name brand that my local jobber carries.

Interestingly, the premium brands appear to cost more, but they come in bigger rolls and when you calculate the per yard cost, they are all roughly the same, about $1.00 - $1.10 per yard, even the "cheap" brands.

Yes Dura Gold is what I was using.... a big mess. I just ordered some Sunmight to try.

Here's an offer:

I want to create a montage video of really nice paint jobs for the "Black Diamond Sanding Block" website.

If you create a quality video of your car (or one you've done for a customer) and send it to me, you will get a free set of the first production blocks. It is totally worth it to me.

The video camera's on most modern phones are totally adequate for this, no need for special equipment.

The key is good lighting (outdoors is best,) nothing distracting in the background, a good "perspective" angle, and slow, smooth motion, showing off the paint quality.
And don't worry about getting a perfect, flowing take of the whole car. Snippets are fine. We can put them together in editing.
Want to show gloss, shine and depth over hoods, fenders, quarters, roof, etc.
I'd really like to have a variety of different types of cars and colors.

High quality stills will also work, but they are hard since really glossy paint reflects background and is hard to make look good, but if you have those, send them and I'll try to use them (we can add motion in the video editing software.)

If you need help getting the file to me, let me know, lots of options to do that.
And post them here, if you are able so others can see your awesome work!

Any takers?

Here is an example of video I shot of my Suburban last year.
Not professional videography, but I can grab 10 or so seconds from it that will work great.

I'm the bluntest person I know, otherwise pretty honest and straight forward. I have been following and rooting for your sanding blocks from the first post you made about them. Put them out in the public and let them pass or fail on their own merits. Putting a bunch of pictures up of people's work who have never touched one of your blocks, is not going to sell me anything. Sorry, I know I'm an ass.

Ouch! I appreciate your candor and, on reflection, I can see your point.
I cannot express how much the support and encouragement I've received from this group has meant to me.
I apologize if my offer caused anyone a similar negative reaction.

Please know that I never intended to represent any work as being done with my sanding blocks, but that they would help people get great results, easier and more efficiently.

Also please know that, even if my enthusiasm leads to to the occasional "belly flop," that same enthusiasm will drive me to deliver something truly awesome.

Thanks.

Sort of like the paint rep from a major paint co that was showing me a picture of a side job he painted and in the background i noticed a Production clear can !!!!!!!!!!!! But good luck and of course we will support you any way we can
