I want feedback!

Andy, I recieved a batch on 11/23 and they were some of the worst peanuts yet.

I don't worry about the static anymore. Just accepted that It's way better to deal with peanuts than spray Dupont stuff.

as far as the static on the peanuts, I wonder if the anti-static spray for cloths would work when unboxing? I'll have to try that on my next order.

Careful that stuff is flammable. I used to have a can at my desk and then I read that, and was like neat...

Mabey I wont then, that could get bad real fast. Oh well I'll just keep using my blow gun to blow them and the little crumbs off.

The peanuts! I just shipped some parts I sold on ebay and got rid of some of mine LOL!

Barry,

We spoke the other day on the phone and I asked you about a problem I had several months ago with the epoxy primer and activator not inducing correctly. After 30 minutes, there was a thick black film on top and a pretty thick layer of solids on the bottom of the cup. You said you had tweaked the dispersant some and it took care of it.

About the time I was having the problem someone started a post about having the same problem but it never got much traction. I felt I should post to the thread to say I was having trouble also. I did not because I perceive the forum is very Barry-friendly. If a bad batch of anything gets through quality control and no one points it out it may be some time before word gets back to you. In the mean time if an individual on the fence of using SPI products or some other brand has a bad experience they may go the other route. If I am wrong about the constructive criticism not getting back to you then I just do not know the facts and apologize. If I ever have a problem with any of your products in the future I will let you know ASAP. By the way, the last two quarts of epoxy primer have inducted just fine.

that separation within 30 minutes is normal in my opinion-always been that way. Mix it up, let it set, then mix it up again before you fill your cup.

Best comparison, I can give!
The cheaper and less solids a clear is the easier and better it will spray but shops don't use them for long as they don't last.
Rarely does a shop complain but do home painters who don't have a good filtration system or not enough air pressure at wall will tend to have problems if sprayed to wet..
When I test a batch, I spray wet like a clear coat and then on one panel slam 2 more coats non stop and I don't get the pin holes, BUT air at wall is 157 air at gun with trigger pulled is 28 be it my Iwata or sata.

PPG LF sprays very nice and easy but no solids and drys fast and as i hear everyday, you can wash it off a week down the road.

You can wash DPLF off years! down the road, done it!

Yeah, I don't really understand why separation in the cup would necessarily indicate a problem. I see this especially with reduced epoxy, but never gave it a thought, and it's never affected the quality of the work afaik, just make sure it's stirred before spray time.

Two reasons epoxy will settle, one it does not like pigments and two epoxy resins do not like the amine in the activator.
Usually see this 60-90 minutes after setting still. Perfectly normal with epoxy.

Funny thing you all may not know!
This company was started about 1992 with just two different bed-liners.
This has turned into a very small part of the business but takes up a lot of room and the materials used to make it are time consuming and unsafe.
On top of that, its a money loser as we get newbees that don't read the instructions until after they spray it and I usually give them a replacement.
I should have discontinued four years ago but could not bring myself to do it, best thing I have ever done.

This is just me thinking out loud, and I don't mean to beat on a dead horse, but would it be feasible for SPI to do a run of bed liner on a once a year basis?
Maybe get a pre-order going on here and run off a batch so you would not have to deal with the general public and all the mixing errors etc.?
This will be the last bed-liner question from me... I promise :)

Can't, buying resins you must buy in quantity or the price will kill you and either way, you would have extra of some left over and may not last a year.
Also, let say were at the 9 month mark and ran out, and someone is short on a job they are doing?? My ears would be on fire when they got done with me.
Making it in the above case, could be 3 weeks start to finish, by the way.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the explanation on the epoxy settling issue.

Charlie D.

Barry, now that you have stepped up to the plate and let everyone take a shot at you, what are your conclusions based on the input you got? Seems to me you should be pretty proud of your company and the way you run it.

I'm happy with the feedback and want to thank everyone, it has helped some and i do listen!!!! ( may not show it but I have not missed a word!)
I have always told my employees, if you call me an idiot or worse, its not your job at risk, I want to know.
Shoot, wife does that all the time and still been married for 40+++ years.

Also, I don't need to ask, anyone has a gripe you all have my cell number! (programmed in your phone I hope)

Regarding the peanuts, has anyone noticed them being any better or any worse in the last month or so? Reason I ask is we switched vendors due to a QC issue with our previous vendor.

Believe it or not, these are anti-static at one point in their lives, but when packing them around metal cans and the tumbling end over end down miles of conveyors then bouncing up and down in trucks and trailers for a thousand miles, they build up static again.

We had a packaging specialist in here a couple weeks ago and we really don't have any feasible options with the size and weight of the products we have. If we shipped ithings, we'd have better solutions.

I received an order today and the peanuts did not stick to me or the cans like the used to.

Maybe it's related to transport time and how much the boxes bounce around, Maybe all the movin and shakin is creating static. Going from GA to your shop vs upstate NY might make a difference. I got an order last week and they were by far the worst I've ever had.

Make forum zoomable as home page is. Hard to read on iPad while taking a break.
Feel terrible saying something neg about the worlds greatest paint co.

May all have a Merry Christmas. I spent past 3 hours blocking my hood while simmering sauce for lasagna.

Since SPI doesn't offer a mixing bank, we need to source basecoats in colors not offered by SPI somewhere else. How about having a page with basecoat brands and lines recommended and to avoid. With the tech line you guys probably hear people having more issues with a brand than others.
