How much clear?

I'm doing a 1968 Camaro in SPI Medium Red. I've determined that I'll need 6 quarts.

If I'm using SPI Universal Clear, how much do I need to order so that I can get 3 coats?

Thanks,
Sal

One kit of Universal (Gallon) becomes two gallons of spray-able product, more than enough for three coats.

I was going to get 6 quarts of red making that 12 quarts (3 gallons) sprayed. The car is a restoration so it is all in primer now. Doing the entire exterior, under the hood and decklid, jams and cowl. And I was figuring I'd clear all of that too.

Does one typically need less clear than base coat?

That will be cutting it close in my experience. Good rule of thumb is 8 ounces per panel per coat. You are painting roughly 13 panels which works out to roughly 2.5 gallons if I did the math right. Novices tend to use more than the pros...

Some cars are twice as big with the same number of panels.
I go by "square feet" and figure 1 oz sprayable per sq.ft. for 3 coats.
A 3' x 2' hood would be 6 oz.
A 3' x 5' ft roof would be 15 oz (big difference)
And when painting you don't have to mix it all at once,
I'll mix half what I need then after spraying that I
can better estimate how much more I need to finish.

I have used about 1.5 gallons (minus the activator) to put 5 coats on a Duster over the last few weeks.. About the same size as a Camaro. Clarification: I did not do the roof as it will have a vinyl roof.
