Oh crap. A neighbor just offered to trade labor. I restore his old Ford truck and he erects a 40x50 shop for me. No body work solid original Arizona vehicle.
Should I do it...... we each pay for our own materials.

40x50 shop, drool! Does his labor include concrete and plumbing (at least slab work)? I assume not electrical.

Provide him with the blue prints and specification for your building and then get a signed contract for the auto restoration stating the level of restoration, etc.

Verbal agreements don't hold up in court should the building collapse and crush your restored vehicles and equipment.

He is in the metal building business and is looking for one that may have been ordered and then never put up. If I look out the window I can see 4 building (including a residence) he put up.

As long as you guys understand what each of you are getting in the deal I'd say go for it!

EDIT!!!
DISREGARD THIS POST, LOL

Seems to me there would be more labor in doing the truck than erecting a building. Especially if he is only providing labor and you are still paying for everything. He and a couple of guys could put that 40x50 up in a week or less 3 guys. 50 hours each, = 150 hours. Truck... I would think a "nice" paint job would be 500 hours min. "Restore" who knows depending on what he's expecting you could have a 1000 hours in it.
Seems like its a much better deal for him than you. Especially with your attention to detail and quality of work you do.

Get him to pay you to restore his truck, then pay him with your proceeds to put up a building and put the rest of your cash in the bank.:)

Oh, gross.. I thought he was supplying the building and the labor....... Ya that would be a hard pass.

I am guessing the cost to get a crane there, let alone use it for a week is 5 grand easy, on top of his labor.

I would do it, just make sure he will let you move in when the building is finished, and not when the restoration is finished......

I have hundreds of customers, low voltage business, I have always had a handful of people that we trade out. We don't charge each other for work, I always try to make sure I'm ahead of them in value, as in I do more for them that they have done for me. They try to do the same but I usually stay ahead. That said, I can count those guys on one hand and we've always had a great personal and business relationship. I have had a few others VERY reminiscent of your deal where I lost my ass. I would NOT do your deal, too many chances for failure there. One as we speak where I traded for a roof job, abt $7k, the guy put me off in good faith and I think he would have come through in the end but unfortunately got cancer and I now can't get him to return calls.

You could use a shop as bad as anyone I know. Watching what you can accomplish in your driveway makes me wonder what you could do with a nice indoor shop. With that being said, I have bartered work a couple times and honestly it never seems to come out right, one or the other always feels shorted somehow. Do each others work for fair pay then swap dollars in the end, much less chance of hating your neighbor when everything is finished.

I have a 30x50 pole barn. When I was getting quotes for buildings ...the going rate to erect a steel building was 7 dollars per square foot....one of the reasons I went with wood frame instead of steel frame. Usually when someone offers a trade. They are trying to win. May not be the case here. When someone suggests things like this I usually marinate on it for about a week before making a decision.

The guys who built my shop did it in 5 days. From dirt work to flushing the toilet. "Turn key". Granted they worked their ass off 10 hour days and had a crew of about 6
