Hobby Painter Level 1: Upgrading From 1K to 2K Like a Big Boy. Please help!

Hey folks, just wanted to share a bit of my journey with the '66 Beetle project and get your thoughts. I started by taking it down to bare metal and applying epoxy primer, but at the time I only used a 1K Rust-Oleum high-filler primer on top because I didn’t have a fresh air supply and didn't trust just an organic mask for 2K products.

Now that I’ve got the fresh air setup, I’m ready to use 2K for a better finish. I’ve been sanding down the old 1K primer and my plan is to apply another coat of epoxy, then a 2K high-filler primer, sand that, apply sealer, and finally do the topcoat and clear coat.

As you probably guessed, I’m an absolute beginner doing this as a hobby at home, so I don’t have much experience. Here’s my big question: there are a few spots where a little 1K primer is still left. Do I need to remove every last trace of it, or is a little leftover okay if it’s stable?

If you have any additional recommendations, I’d love to hear them. Thanks a bunch for the advice!

I would recommend removing all of it. And unless you need the extra filling that the 2K provides, you don't really need to use 2K. If your metal is clean and straight, you can spray paint onto the epoxy.
