HD tank masking

At one time there was a thread somewhere on the correct way or different ways to tape the gas fill cap area of HD tanks to increase the chances of the fumes not lifting the paint...... Can someone steer me in the right direction??? JIM C? anyone??

Its not really how you mask it. Few important steps, basecoat is activated, a quick coat of sealer is put on under the base preferably epoxy. When the whole job is done the paint edge is sealed with novalac epoxy.

Ok I definately do all of that except for the novalac....... I just was thinking there was an ideal spot to put the edge to increase your chances.....

Well it depends on the tank. The gas fill has changed over the years. If you have the kind with the little groove around it then i like to end the paint in that groove then fill the groove with the epoxy. If its flat and smooth upto the gas fill hole i just end it right on the edge

As you can see this is what I was up against! :)

Ahh yes that is an aftermarket tank. I usually do the bodywork and fill up to the level of the filler hole so you dont see that weld at all. I sand the metal with 120 over the edge and down into the hole a bit. I stop the paint right at the edge then seal that with epoxy sealer. 1/8" into the paint then down in the hole to the first thread

So run the epoxy into the hole a little ways and then stop
The base clear right at the edge???

Dang, see Trent, this why I said post-- learn something everyday!
