Gun cleaning between coats??

Hey guys, newbie question, do you clean your gun between basecoats ?? The same goes for clear I would imagine.

Leaving the gun sit between coats with paint in the cup creeps me out. I will squeeze the trigger a few times while waiting. The disposable cups make it easy to pop the cup off and shoot some reducer through also.

Between basecoat coats? How would there even be time to? Whether it's clear or base, the gun isn't cleaned until after the last coat to go on.
I thought flash time ( or wait time) was approx 30-45 min ?

Follow tech sheet but slower is always better to make sure no solvents trapped. At least that is my practice.
Agreed. I thought I read Barry's recommendation of 30 to 45 min between basecoats. This is what prompted my question.

If you are not in a production environment it is a good idea to clean after each coat. Even base. When I'm giving base the full amount of flash time between coats (30 minutes) I will empty my gun back into my mixing cup. Especially with metallics.

This is what I do, why take the chance?

I can tell you from experience that I have let my gun sit between coats of Euro clear for 30 minutes and have started to spray a panel and boom there are dry flakes of clear fly onto the panel and create a mess. I clean my gun out now between coats to avoid this, I don't like to create more work for myself.

When I was spraying a single stage on that camper last year that did have a 30 min flash and I did dump the cup and rinse gun in that case. Sitting 30 min makes me nervous.

That's a nice thing about using a closed cup system. Just pop the cup off and run some thinner through it between coats. Always between color and clear.

i wipe out the cup then rinse the nozzle with a bottle.

If you look on my bench you will notice 2 Yellow Mustard screw top bottles.
Best idea I've had in awhile.
Twist, point, squirt, twist, done. No cap to lose or flip top to flop.
Amazing how many different size openings it fits.
Been using the same 2 for years with laq thinner and reducer. Mostly laq thinner but reducer is no problem either.
